Pitt at Miami (Game 3)

He really hasn't. He's got a 5.68 era. He strikes out a lot of guys, but he gives up a ton of runs. He's had some pretty good games, but he's had some games where he just gets clobbered. He's way too inconsisten to be considered to be a good closer.
He has good stuff and has gotten the job done in all the games I’ve seen. He gets a little too lax with a big lead. Today for example giving up a 3-run HR with an 8 run lead. Which games has he come in with a lead and we ended up losing the game? I’m not saying he’s the greatest by any means, but gets the job done when I’ve seen him pitch.

He gave up three runs to Army in a game we lost by two. He gave up a tying run to Youngstown State in a game we ended up losing by three. And while we didn't have the lead he did give up the winning run on Friday.

And in any event, let's not pretend that coming in when we are beating BC by four and giving up three is good pitching, or coming in when we are beating Louisville by six and giving up five is good pitching. Sometimes he pitches really well. Sometimes he pitches really poorly. He might be the best of the lot, but it is not a very good "lot". Not at all.

Big Picture - We are a northern school playing in a top tier baseball conference. I guess I don’t realistically expect us to have 4-5 really good pitchers. Gilby and Corcoran are about as good as we could hope for at this point, and imo Stuart is doing well by getting the job done. The team started the year slowly and are coming together as a unit. Do you know what happened to Summers and will we be getting any of our injured players back in the near future?

I do not know what happened to Summers. It doesn't seem like Pitt wants anyone to know any information at all about any of their injured players. Even this past week when both the local papers wrote about the team (around the WVU game) Bell only gave vague quotes about injured players and when any of them might be coming back.

Now of course who knows if anyone pressed him for answers and he just didn't give any, or if the writers didn't even bother, but it seems like they don't want anyone to know what is going on. They put out press releases every week and those never mention when any of the injured guys might be back. Heck, they typically don't even mention that someone actually is injured.

Despite losing 3 of 4 this week, Pitt actually improved three spots in RPI rankings to 41. Playing number 7 three times and winning one helped. WVU jumped 9 spots to 33.

If you look at someplace that does real time RPI tracking, the losses to Miami actually made no change at all to Pitt's RPI. The benefit from playing a team with a record that good against a good schedule exactly equaled out with the cost of losing a game on the team's record.

WVU was a small RPI loss, the two Miami losses were neutral, and the Miami win was a big gain. Throw in all the other results from all of our other former opponents and the week turns out a small positive.
