Pitt baseball up to 35 RPI - jumped 6 spots without playing

WVU dropped a midweek at home to Penn State last night. Three games for Pitt combined against those two over the next few weeks. That’s an RPI killer loss for WVU.

Three games this weekend against a team as bad as North Carolina A&T isn't going to help. That needs to be a sweep or it could be an RPI disaster.

Current RPI - 59
They need to beat PS and then go 4-3 or better against ND, GT, and WV. If they do that, then they will be squarely on the bubble going into ACC tournament.

The thing is, we could actually be a good ACC tournament team. We will put two guys out there the first two games who will give us every chance to win two games and make the semi-finals. But then we will have to play a third game. And we will be in trouble.

I’d say we are in tournament if we beat PS, go 4-3 against ND, WV, and GT, and get 2 wins in the ACC tournament.

Miller was the guy I was counting on as the third starter, Summers as the closer.

Neither worked out.

Dragoni a disappointment as well.

Pitching recruiting a disaster. Did the staff change play a Role?

Damn didn't think they'd go down after the weekend. Knew they wouldn't jump up a ton though. Definitely going to have to pull out some wins.

Beating Duke didn't give Pitt any RPI points. Losing to them lost them a bunch. They needed a sweep for the RPI to not go down at least a few spots.

But from here on out the script flips. The Hoopies are 27-18. Losing to them at their place won't really cost much, if anything. Notre Dame is 28-10. Losing to them won't hurt at all. The nitters are 23-21, so a loss to them will hurt but not a lot. And Georgia Tech is 27-21. So again, losing to them won't hurt much. But on the other hand, beating any of those teams will help. Other than maybe the nitters wins will help a lot more than losses will hurt. So our RPI should go up the next couple of weeks.

Unless we lose most of the games.

Ron Washington, two hits including a home run.

Everyone else, zero hits.

Pitching staff walked 8 tonight.

RPI dropped two spots to 61.

Good to hear Lanny doing the game. Its a shame we don’t have that quality of announcer or production.Lanny is still good even now.

Tell me that you have never paid any attention to Pitt baseball without telling me that you've never paid any attention to Pitt baseball.
He was in position for a bid late several times in the Big East and maybe once in the ACC in his last 10 or so years. I swear the one year a late loss to UMES kept them out. Another year it was Coppin State. Another (this was in the ACC I believe), it was a loss to Miami OH in the Finals Week series. This team seems no different. The NC A&T and Oakland losses will keep them out.

Pitt really needs to win 2 out of 3 versus ND. Their RPI will dramatically improve if they can do this.

The last year we were in the Big East is basically the only one that there was a good chance we'd get in (obviously as an at large) and we didn't. In a league that frequently needed someone other than the regular season champion to win the tournament just for a chance to get two teams in the NCAA tournament.

The only other year that we might have been in the conversation was 2010.

In what was frequently a one bid league (other than when there was an upset in the conference tournament), Pitt had the following Big East finishes under Jordano:

1st - 0
tied for 2nd - 1
3rd - 3
4th - 2
5th - 1
6th - 2
7th - 1
8th - 2
9th - 2
10th - 0
11th - 2

There was a year in the mid 2000s that they made the BET Semis or Final. I remember Billy and Dick doing the BET on the radio. They didn't get in but there was some thought they should have but that was when college baseball coverage, even on the internet was in its infancy. That team had a few guys get close to the majors. Kevan Smith may have been on it.

The last BE team was the 40 win team I think. I don't remember the 2010 team exactly but those were probably 2 of the teams I'm referencing. I also remember 1 ACC team getting close under Jordano

Pitt's best season in the ACC under Jordano was his last, when they went 11-19 in conference and 29-26 overall and finished 6th out of 7 in the Coastal division. We were the 12th seed in the ACC tournament, in a year that six ACC teams made the NCAA tournament.

That team was no where close to making the NCAA tournament.

What may be getting you confused is that as the 12th seed that team actually won both of their pool play games, beating top five North Carolina and Georgia Tech each by one run. That got them to the semi-finals, where two more wins would have gotten them to the tournament. But they lost in the semis to fifth seed Louisville.
