Maybe the ACC can arrange these teams in an "Academic Division." Then have FSU, Clem, UNC, NC St, Miami, SMU (will be good quick $$$) play in the "Football Division." Not even totally joking. The Pac 12 and Mountain West are discussing promotion/relegation within themselves. So like the best teams play in the P12 and the bottom teams in the MWC.

They aren't really discussing that, because none of them would be stupid enough to agree to it.

Just because someone throws out a goofy idea that doesn't mean that it has a snowball's chance in Hades of happening.

Yes they are.

It would be something like the Pac 12 adds all 12 MWC teams to preserve the brand, the history, the records. But there would be 2 divisions:

Pac 12 (top 7 teams)
Mountain West (bottom 7 teams)

So lets say the "Pac 12 Division" has Or St, WSU, Boise, SDSU, Colorado St, Fresno

MWC Division has Wyoming, AFA, UNM, Hawaii, SJSU, Nevada, UNLV

Once again, just because someone throws out a stupid idea that doesn't mean that it has any chance of happening. There is no way, and I mean literally no way, that those schools are all going to agree to something so monumentally stupid.

Doesn't it make sense though? The P12 goes to the networks and says we're putting the best teams in 1 division and these end of season relegation battles will increase viewership. 4-7 Colorado St vs 5-6 C
Fresno State just became a big game because neither wants relegated to the lower division. Maybe instead of a conference championship game, they have a relegation game like the Bundesliga does. Bottom P12 division team gets relegated. 2nd to worst P12 division team plays the #2 MWC team to stay in the P12.

No, it doesn't.

4-7 Colorado State versus 5-6 Fresno State fighting against relegation might (with emphasis on the word might) be meaningful in Fort Collins, Colorado and Fresno, California. But no one else in the whole rest of the country gives a crap about that game, no matter what fake stakes you want to attach to it.

You can't seriously think that one of the television networks is going to have any interest in showing that game instead of a decent SEC or Big Ten or ACC or Big 12 game, do you? Hell, why would they have any interest in showing that rather than a game between the actual good teams in the conference?

It makes bad games slightly less bad. That's what I'm saying.

Listen, this new league is going to suck. Pro/rel makes it a little more interesting. And really, all its doing is making all the best teams play each other so maybe one of them can make the 12 team playoff by going 12-0

It turns games that no one would ever care about into games that, well, no one will ever care about.

Hooray, I guess?

It's the last weekend of the season. Michigan is playing Ohio State. Auburn is playing Alabama. Florida State is playing Florida. Clemson is playing South Carolina. Washington is playing Washington State (OK, maybe not). USC is playing UCLA. Pitt is playing Syracuse. And you think that your average television viewer is going to instead be tuning into Colorado State playing Fresno State.

Even by your standards, that's nuts.

No, not the average viewer. But at 8PM Pacific time, maybe the average Pac 12 fan. It makes a terrible game more interesting. And as I said, that's not the only reason to do this.

Wait, so your plan is to start this all important, the whole nation is holding it's breath waiting for it, game at 11 PM eastern time? And THAT's going to draw in the big audience?

Like I said, even by your standards.

No. Not the whole nation.

Let me ask you this. Do you think Apple TV or whoever wants to buy the P12 contract wants this hypothetical game to have pro/rel meaning or no meaning?

The problem is the tv drawing power of a team doesn’t necessarily follow their record.

Snd you aren’t regulating your tv draw down to the B level just because their record sucks. The network cares about eyeballs.

They don't want either. That's the whole point. The fact that you think that the television ratings for a crappy Colorado State playing a crappy Fresno State is going to draw in television viewers who don't care even a little bit about those teams simply because one of them might get relegated from a league that no one cares about to a different league that no one cares about is nuts. Plain and simple, nuts.

No one cares about that game now. No one will care about that game no matter what faux significance you attach to it. Hell, they could declare that that game is for the national championship (the UCF gambit) and no one will care about it, because no one cares about those teams.

I am saying it will get more West Coast viewers if they were playing to stay up than if they were playing for absolutely nothing. How many more? 1? 10? 1000? 10,000? I dont know. But more.

Literally none of those numbers make any difference at all in how much money someone is willing to pay for the product. In fact they are well over an order of magnitude below what would make someone even begin to consider it.
