Maddox remains close to his high school coaches. Assistant coach Terel Patrick brought some players to the Penn State game at Heinz Field. When Maddox had coverage problems at Oklahoma State, Patrick sent him encouraging text messages.
“He told me it would be all right,” Maddox said.
Turns out, Patrick was right. Maddox recovered last Saturday with an interception for a touchdown and a pass breakup against Marshall.
“He knows he can do it, and he can do it,” Pitt defensive coordinator Josh Conklin said.
Maddox understands the demands of playing cornerback at Pitt and the inevitable criticism that comes from fans when times are bad.
