Excerpts
Pittsburgh coach Pat Narduzzi is not among those you will find supporting no-contact practice restrictions. Narduzzi went on Fox Sports' The Audible podcast and discussed why he's so against the rules.
"It's a big deal," Narduzzi said. "We're not playing soccer or field hockey or basketball. It's the game of football and it's a contact sport. You can't play the game without contact. You might as well cancel spring ball altogether because now what you're doing is 7-on-7. You're playing pass. You can't stop the run. I think it's a crazy rule." He went on to explain why he thinks they are crazy and how he feels the focus should be on teaching proper fundamentals rather than eliminating contact altogether. "If you're getting away from having contact, how are we going to teach them to do it the right way?" said Narduzzi. "You talk about concussions and tackling the proper way, all of a sudden you're taking a period away from the younger guys who don't know how to tackle where they can learn how to do it the right way, and how to do it better and avoid putting their head down and now you've eliminated a teaching moment."...........
....."I definitely think there's things we need to do better as coaches," he said. "I think it comes down to coaching. Coaches can do a better job of teaching it the right way. Tackle with your chest. Your head should be out of it. Your eyes should be to the sky. We've tried to get rid of the targeting and launching and leading with your head. I think that's all part of it, and I think that needs to be eliminated. We didn't have one targeting call against us last year. We'd rather tackle you low anyway."
