In the Wanny/Graham/Chryst era, which player who decommtied turned out to have the best college career?

Wasnt Bill Belton a PITT lean / commit before Wanny left?

If you include Harris I suppose you'd have to say Morelli. He did start there for a while.

Don't recall who was our coach at the time but I remember there being a DB who de-committed from us and ended up going to Wake Forest of all places and having a decent career.

And what about the DB that went to Va Tech, Jarrett I think was his last name. I think he had de-committed from us as a result of one of our coaching changes, also had a decent but not stellar career if I remember correctly.

And the RB that de-committed from us and went to Wisconsin is having a decent career, Clement. Although we've done well at RB in recent years and it hasn't been a large position of need.

I think Belton was a 'lean' and not a 'verbal' and although Antnee was a (supposed) solid Pitt verbal, I don't either hurt us all that much. I mean, who would you have rather had Morelli or Palko? Belton or Conner? With the aid of hindsight, it still is unclear. And I'm restraining myself and not bringing up Andrew Johnson. HAHAHAHA!!!!!

Belton was a verbal to wanny. we lost quite a few verbals when wanny was fired. the db who went to vt, another to wvu and a middle lb went to ups. also a d-lineman i think who went to rutgers also the qb nova

Was Darius Hamilton a Pitt verbal before going to Rutgers?

And there was QB Gary Nova, but I wouldn't consider him a big loss.

Are some of you guys kidding me?
Morrelli, Gary Nova, Bill Belton? Someone mentioned Isaaka the DL that went to RU? Give me a break

Franklin will always have great classes. So did Hoke but neither can coach. Narduzzi can and will out coach him.

None really have had great careers. Maybe Corey Clement? Then again, he'd be backing up Conner regardless (or James).

I thought Quinton Alston might be a star, but he hadn't seemed to put it all together. Kid showed great class and character throughout his recruitment, so I wish him the best.

Alphonso Smith of Wake and Kyshoen Jarrett of VT are the two that most come to mind.

Wait....Joe Flacco to Delaware!

Regarding Morelli, Belton, and Kline.

I do not believe Morelli was a flip. I thought he made his decision late, was looked at a a "pitt lock", and then decided on PSU.

Both Bill Belton and Ben Kline (LB) opened their recruitment when Dave Wannstedt was fired and ended up at PSU. Kline will be a redshirt Sr. in 2015, had played well when not injured, but missed about 2 seasons with injuries. I was playing golf with Wannstedt when Kline called him and committed. After getting off the phone Dave explained what happened, and said he was convinced that Ben was the best LB in PA that year. Actually we were playing in the T. Dorsett McGuire Memorial.

Re: Regarding Morelli, Belton, and Kline.

Morelli was committed to Pitt up until he sat in with Palko and Harris in a QB meeting. He realized that he lacked the intellectual capacity to learn the system so he (and his daddy) went looking for a simple system.

Terrell Pryor

Didn't he commit to play hoops?

Hail to Pitt!

Dave

Re: Terrell Pryor

As a 9th grader. Along with Pope, who I believe was a sophomore.

Jamie's highest rated class ever-just 3-4 !years too early.

Not sure what point you're making, PHX.

I see Morrelli, Nova and Belton and say "really, that's what we gnashed our teeth over??"

I'm assuming that you're point this out...

On the other hand, if you think those players are "misses" by Pitt - dude, we've had SO much better here.

^^^^ PERHAPS THE MOST POIGNANT RECRUITING MESSAGE EVER ^^^

Don't think that PittGuy00 was attempting to make a seminal point by his question... but!!

Looking back at the "flips" to other programs over the last, approximately, 10 years, who made a difference???

Who would have changed Pitt's fortunes had he stayed??

NOT ONE!!!!

Re: Regarding Morelli, Belton, and Kline.

I too remember the Morelli story just as JoeyDavid told it. What do PSU fans think of Morelli? Well, when complaining about how Franklin and staff have messed up Hackenberg, one BWI poster said he took a first round draft pick and turned him into Morelli.

Whoever people mention, you have to mention who they'd

replace. For example, Quinton Alston would certainly be able to replace Grigsby and Keyshawn Jarrett is better than Vinopal.

I believe Noah Spence was a wanny verbal/recruit and he actually was doing well until that monkey showed up on his back.

Morelli was #1 rated in PA I believe. There was that Aaron Donald guy way down the list that same year (in the twenty's) that did come to Pitt and he turned out all right. That JJ Watt guy didn't go to Pitt but was a two-star coming out of high school and I think he's doing ok for himself too.

There are a ton of really stellar athletes that look great against high school competition but don't know how to work hard enough to dominate in college. That's something the kid has to decide but I think the coach has to know how to bring that out too. Raw talent can't be taught but hard work and desire can when a kid is put in the right environment.

He never did commit, but we were in pretty good shape with him. Not a decommit though.

Also, didn't we get at least one or two good recruits because Graham left? Dorian Johnson maybe?

It was just awful what happened to Noah Spence. He was such a great DE for my team but he pissed it all away. He did mention, before he left, that tOSU treated him very well even though they knew he wasn't going to be able to play for the Buckeyes again. I think they helped him find a good school and I am sure he will be a great NFL defensive end. He was just an awesome player and a nice guy but he couldn't stay away from Ecstasy. He was clearly better than the guy who replaced him.

Not to derail the thread, but yeah it's pretty startling how far both he and Shell, two of the biggest PA recruits of a generation have fallen. Wouldn't be surprised to see Spence eventually make his way into the NFL, but he'll have an uphill climb.

oh dang, I thought I was the only one that remembered Pryor. Smith is a good one, he turned into a very good CB at Wake.. Alston would have definitely played for us, Jarrett would have been a dang good one..
