As I see it and my eyes are old, but we have much younger ones with much more Foresight to share their own visions on the Lair.......Pitt has the Cooaches that will develop "Shades Of JJ Watts", with Partridge in the Pitt Tree! Coach CP is every thing one can see in Coach PN. after reading this i am still high on Pitt's Defensive Lines especially Taleni and Watts, yet I still can see Kam Carter has great motivation to prove many wrong on his second chance and if Carte Commits to Partridge Coaching, Himself, and Pitt? I am a tad worried on the Health Durability of Hendrix based on what i read. I am high on the sky of Pugh now that Partridge will be coaching him too. Depth is still a problem!

If Watson can do the same with QBs and TEs and Play Calling Timing on Game Days Pitt could be in for setting up a very Special Foundation for a very special year....Just a Hunch!
Excerpts:

The smartest coaches deploying the most talented players can fail if the most important ingredient is missing. After the first day of spring drills Thursday, Pitt defensive coordinator Josh Conklin called it "a certain swagger." He didn't say pointedly that last year's defense was lacking in that area, but he did admit the apparent problems can be found on a "two-way street" inhabited by players and coaches......Then, there's swag. Conklin said defensive line coach Charlie Partridge, in his second stint at Pitt, is the man to coax it from his players. "He's a great motivator, a tremendous teacher," Conklin said. "He brings great energy to those guys................"We do a study every year, and we look at how many fade passes were thrown," Conklin said. Usually, it's about 100. Last year, the number reached 144. "(Opponents) can't run the ball, so the fade ball becomes their best, viable option," Conklin said. "(Last) year was a 36 percent completion rate on the fades, which isn't good enough."

36%....Watching the games it seemed more like 75% completion.

Against VT last year the fade was very much like Ivory soap, 99.9 percent completion. Not quite that high but certainly seemed as though every fade was a completion.
Those weren't even true fades. The QB just threw the ball like a balloon down the sideline and their big receivers just waited for it to come down and pushed off our DBS to make the catch. That was the game that Duzz was really flipping out over the officials not calling the pushoffs.

Clearly, they know the problems from 16th in running but even in the last two games still run over, to 128th of passing in or out of position whether in placed missed, and lacking pressures, sacks and turnovers. Now must develop the players to develop a Consistent Defense.

The Offense and Special Teams are there but they must solutions for the Defense and they will, just a matter of when?

Refs were a total joke against vt... vt's sideline was one of the worst.. their S/C coach was a punk sissy...

I hear you and you are not wrong but.....Lost by 3, lost by 7, lost by 1, Lost by 7, just one Defensive Play at the right time on Third Down or one more Catch for a TD could have made a big difference in 4 games.

Pitt would have been 9-4 or 10-3, 11-2, or 12-1 and the ACC Refs as bad as they are and not just in ACC Games, but the USC-PSU game, would be irrelevant.

However, what needs fixed on Pitt Defense is not Ref Calls but better Coaching with better Player Execution on Defensive Lines, Linebackers and Defensive Backs and that will make Pitt's Opponent OC Coaches Irrelevant!

Just as I see it, I want a Defense that overcomes all adversity, injuries, bad communications, missed tackles, missed balls, and mistakes on execution even if in position.....and let Coach Pat argued with the Refs on other matters.

Coaches & Players know the problems and have to solve them!

We saw rock bottom last year with our secondary. The team is already starting to take a narduzzi look to it, with long, fast guys who can run. Even if they improve into the top 100 in pass defense it will have a dramatic result on the field and our overall defensive ratings.

Good post, and improvement of 4 to 8 plays a game on Defense is what you are saying, few know but 4 to 6 plays a game by 2 to 3 players can often decide a game to win it, I did not say it, a very smart coach told me that to me face, the Pitt season in 2016 proved it. Penn State did it even better with less plays in 2016!
