Well I knew this day was coming at some point and today is that day. Lair is my social media home. This place is important to me so I’ve always felt comfortable communicating with all of you. Even when things go sideways and I’m a knucklehead, like on the hoop side today haha, I want you to know…. I’m your knucklehead. I’ll try to keep most of the father side of this out but it’s hard because I love Mickey more than words can describe and I’m very happy to share his story with you today. As quite a few of you know Mickey is my son. I had full custody of Mick at the age of 7. For quite awhile it was just us. Words can’t describe how close we are.
Mickey played football at Duquesne and has 3 championship rings from those teams. He volunteered for one year under the DL coach who is now the DC at Edinboro. He has a Championship ring and Duquesne’s only playoff win to show for that year with the coaching staff. Graham and Duzz hired Mick away from Duquesne into the Recruiting department. He was in recruiting for two years until Duzz decided to put him back on the field as the defensive GA under Bates and Manny. That interview process was intense. Mickey has been one of the in-game live defensive signalers for the last two season. Huge responsibility for a young coach like him. He ran scout team O and scout team special teams. I’m here to tell you position coaches rely on these young coaches more than I ever realized. For reference Head Coaches and Coordinators interview and hire these kids. The experience Mick has gained over the last 5 years is crucial and I now appreciate the fact that most coaches like Duzz and say James Franklin go down the identical path Mickey has the last 5 years.
Today Mickey accepted the Assistant LB Coach and Defensive Analyst(QC) position at the University of Buffalo. This is a big position that keeps Mick in D1 and the MAC. I won’t drag you through staff details but Buffalo has a really good young staff. Obviously I’m excited because Mick, his wife and my grandson are close. Mick had options. Duquesne would always be attractive to Mick if their LB room opened up. At the end of the day for a young coach Mickey hit a HR with Buffalo.
I hope Mick doesn’t mind me sharing this final thing with you. The staff wanted Mickey to take this job for obvious reasons. A couple coaches demanded it. He told them to give him 5 minute to call his wife and me. I’ll remember that call for the rest of my life. Here is what I want you to know. The last thing he told Duzz before he called Buffalo and accepted was that his goals are aligned with getting back to him at Pitt. Mickey loves Pitt more than I can describe. He’s so loyal to Duzz and the rest of the staff. His dream jobs all go through Pitt.
From one Pitt man to my Lair brothers and sisters thanks for everything and know I did the best I could to get as much factual info to you as I possibly could.
