PITT doesn't win in any sports (And I agree)...............

I think you're reading something into my post that I didn't write or imply.

I don't disagree with what you wrote above.

My point was that Joe thought he controlled everything, and Jerry didn't need to go because he didn't want Jerry to go.
Oh absolutely. We're definitely in sync on that

The rest of the team got, uh, "grants". Why that's okay in an Olympic sport and not football is weird.

The "grants" that those kids got (and in many cases still get) are Pell Grants. That's a program administered by the federal government that you either qualify for or you don't, and athletics have nothing at all to do with it. I will absolutely guarantee you that lot's of Pitt's athletes get "grants" too, just like the ones at Penn State did and do.

And the reason that it's OK for Olympic sports athletes but not football players is pretty simple. The amount of the grant is based on (among other things) the amount of money the student is paying to go to school. Your average Olympic sports athlete is still paying many thousands of dollars of tuition, room and board, etc. because they aren't getting full scholarships whereas the average football player is getting a full ride. So when the football player applies for a grant and they are checking the eligibility to received the grant and the amount of tuition paid is $0, well, I'll bet they'd happily give that person a grant for the full amount of the $0.

im no fan of any sport in college to be honest, outside of mens hoops and football. with that said, being 3rd from the bottom of the P5 list is rather pathetic.. we should have a top 25 wrestling program, we SHOULD be competitive in mens soccer (the coach is supposed to be some great hire) and I know northern schools are at a severe disadvantage in baseball, I'd LOVE to see Pitt not suck enough so I'd be interested in going to a game or two at that nice new park..

Pitt swimming used to be pretty good in 90s, I think. far and away below Notre Dame but still one of the better big east programs. for us to be consistently terrible in most sports, that's alarming.. Hope our new AD can change that around..

What is NOT alarming however....is how some Pitt fans want to kill the messenger. ...in this case a nitter. ......and pay little attention to the actual study.....

Which shows how bad we suck as an athletic department

Disagree. Pitt fans know exactly how bad our athletic dept has sucked over the last 35 years.

No one is killing messenger. We know our athletic dept is an abortion gone wrong, and has been for a long time.

Repeating Yahoo's conclusions doesn't make anyone anti anything.
The facts are there for all to see. Pitt treated athletic teams and facilities like crap for most of the last 80 years. Our ADs have mostly been bottom barrel types. Never did our department attract high quality folks in large numbers. Likewise, good people usually left.
That is why it is important to build a foundation of success. I don't like PSU anymore than anyone else, but face facts. They systematically built a high achieving department with great results in most, but not all sports. Men's hoops has been their Achilles heel. But they do pay attention to other sports because they know that students who play those sports are statistically more likely to succeed financially.
Football is the heart of most successful departments...basketball for fewer but still some.
I believe it's important to pay attention to the heart so the others can be healthy. Listen...there is a big world outside of PA..don't focus on PSU. Other P5 blue bloods feed their other sports because it builds a root system for success.
Pitt doesn't need a miracle worker as AD, but it needs someone willing to do the dirty work.
I see Lyke as a dirt under her nails person. Miracles? Nope. Who cares? Miracles tend to be as lasting as a Hollywood marriage. Give me a good foundation and I'll get thru the hard times.

Basketball has been struggling, but I think football has been far better off. We beat clemson last year, we've been competitive in conference. Much better than failing to win the big east when you had more talent than any other team most years.

Some In-conference records of Pitt programs since joining the ACC-
Baseball: 39-79
M soccer: 0-28-7
W soccer: 7-36
Softball: 32-62
Tennis: 1-55

If Pitt goes 10-3 in football and 24-10 in basketball, then they could go 0-200 in those sports. Football and men's basketball are the list of sports that matter, and that is where the $ should go.

All that is needed for Pitt to rocket to the top 20 in collegiate sports is to follow the successful example of Penn State.
We need the respected medical and health schools of the university to start conducting and releasing bogus research glorifying the experiment drugs of Big Pharma and predicting the total eradication of cancer, heart disease, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, Schizophrenia, balding and aging due to the use of these drugs.
Not only would Pfizer build us an on campus stadium, but all scholarships would be fully funded by Merck, 100's of millions would be donated to the general and athletic funds, and Roche, Novartis, Glaxo Smith, Kline and others would build us, gratis, a towering " Big Pharma" school, staffed by their own employees.
Follow the leader!

Success in those two, especially football (better than 10-3 level at least some years and flirtation with championships or playoffs occasionally)would help lift the boats in all these sports.

Basketball is hopeless for a long long time to come now sadly, but we're really not all that impossible in football ... we have a solid dynamic coach and some guys of real promise... if only the admin could see fit to unleash boosters to really throw in behind the sport to bring it to a high level (turn those 3 stars into more fours, and keep coaches like Canada) we could clean up and lift the moribund unimportant sports with it (if they care to, which i wouldn't, but whatever).

But our pinhead nerdlinger leaders are too busy kicking out our best recruit because he didn't take astrophysics classes ... sigh.
