This is definitely a second chance at a total rebuild

We should be more than elated to rebuild this roster. Just saying.

True. But I would like to see us land at least one dude from Duke/Kansas/Kentucky/etc. who was like their 7th man or something. Someone who we know can play but maybe wasn't quite good enough to get the minutes he wanted at his prior school.

These lower level guys... it's a guessing game. And the safe guess is usually that they won't work out.

Completely agree!

Brick by brick...
Right now he needs a pallet load.

Everyone hates portal season but i think it's fun.
Freedom to move is a great thing
but is it good for the game overall ? I don't know , but if the viewership on TV declines enough over a period of time, i'm sure you will see tweaks to slow the movement some.

I’ll take a Duke waterboy or Kentucky Rec team player at this point.

I was glad for the kids especially since coaches can just leave whenever. Glad they get some money too with the NIL deals. But all this movement isn’t great from a fan of the team perspective. At least for me. And maybe it’s because what we saw with how the Pitt teams developed and the “linkage”. That’s done and dusted for the most part. Still a Pitt fan but it’ll be different with so many faces coming and going annually.

Yeah I'll miss the great days of building something special and develpment. I truly enjoy watching a developing team and player.
But that's just long gone and I'll find the fun in this circus

It needs to change, it’s out of control.
Whether it needs to or not the precedent has been set. Afraid of the lawyers now.

Nobody knows what they’re going to have from year to year now. Between the Portal and opt outs for various pro opportunities, domestic and foreign. Then throw NIL into the mix. Pretty much roster roulette. Free agency on steroids. No longer the game we knew.

When free agency hit baseball and then football it was going to ruin the game , but guess what they’re doing just fine .

The college transfer portal is a little different. The parties on each end of the portal transaction basically have no skin in the game, nothing to lose. If it doesn’t work out, back to the portal for both of them. No big downside risk to keep the decision making process honest.

Players can change teams like they change their underwear. Teams can grab new players without costing themselves anything but a one year scholarship commitment. Players paying their dues for a couple of years and developing into starters as upperclassmen—like many of our starters did under Dixon—is a thing of the past.

Nobody will ever be able to convince me that this is good for the game in any way, shape or form.

Actually, getting something "for the kids" and giving them freedom has ruined all college sports and will ruin it more and eventually kill things as we knew it. Also, coaches should not be allowed to skip out early on contracts without being monetarily punished, the schools should of banded together and made that clear decades ago. Eventually, there will probably just be a dozen teams at the highest level in football and basketball, mostly from southern states where they care more about winning sports than academics and most schools will either drop big time sports or play D3, I think it's eventually coming.

Plus there are contracts between players and teams in pro sports. So a key player cant just walk in to the team and say “I’m leaving today“ without any ramifications or repurcussions.

Maybe at some point NIL will cause more of a contractual relationship to exist in college sports? Or maybe not? 🤷‍♂️
But right now it seems like kind of a free for all.

The players have one free transfer I believe , things will settle down as time goes on .

Gradually, yes. The problem from a school’s standpoint is when you recruit a HS player, he comes in with a free pass. You could spend a tremendous amount of time and effort recruiting him. Or then invest more in PT and development. And then he can leave at his sole discretion.

I certainly understand the intent of the rule And why it was implemented. But if I’m a CBB HC, I’d also be very discretionary about what HS players I signed. This will hurt the chances for many HS prospects to get signed by P6 programs initially, IMO. Maybe that’s an aspect of this that the Portal proponents did’t give enough consideration to? Time will tell.

Exactly , and coaches like JC can’t recruit hs kids who are ready to play . When he tries to bring in guys who are projects the chances of those guys sticking around till they can contribute is unlikely . Pitt needs the portal and a few good finds to be competitive.

Very few schools can recruit a lot of HS talent immediately ready to play at a real high P6 level. And the real good ones (like Champ) don’t stick around in college for more than a year or 2. They want that big pro salary.

Roster planning is very tough now. But there is no doubt that Capel has done a lousy job here so far. In terms of recruiting and retention. You get paid the big bucks you have to produce and do the job regardless There are NO excuses.

I don't see how anyone other than maybe 30 programs can even recruit HS players now. You know they're going to transfer

That’s not “plus”-that’s what my post is about. Free agency is a business transaction based on substantial contractual and financial commitments. The transfer portal involves no commitment of any consequence to either side. Honestly it’s a joke.

Well since he’ll be here next season I hope he figures it out asap !
