Pitt should be 10-1, could be 11-0, , and 8-3 at the absolute worst. Most of these will be blowouts. At 10-1, Pitt would be 19-2. Only 3 potential challenges. Notre Dame, Louisville, and Florida State. We can run this next 11 game table. 20-1 start would be sweet.

That would be nice, because in the last eight games there are a lot of @'s on the schedule and some top notch teams.

Steel, when it comes to football, I not only pay attention to your posts, but I also feel like I'm
learning something since you have an insider's view and apparently you're en ex Div1 player.
You usually add info, comments, and opinions that reflects someone who is still involved with the game.
Now when it comes to Bball, that's a little different. 10-1 to open ACC play? I hope you're right but
I don't see it. Yesterday's game has a lot of people excited on here, Yes, we did look Very good. But
as one of the Pittsburgh newspapers noted, it was a total mismatch in size and athleticism...I'll add
talent and depth to the equation.
UVA, Duke, UNC, Louisville are horses of an entirely different breed. They at least match us in all of our strengths, on top of that they play less out of control then we do. Man to Man D looked good yesterday, but the talent disparity made that possible. We had trouble with the one guard they had, Barber from NC State and others in this league will be much, much tougher. We have three centers and none of them match what I've seen so far from the better ACC teams. For that matter, I'd take the two big men from Kent State (who ateour lunch) over our three.
Ok, with all that said....I'd like to be wrong and see that 10-1 prediction come true. Let's see what happens.

I expect Pitt to open 8-1 in ACC play. Pitt still has 2 cupcakes in the non-conference schedule.

6-3. Losses at Lou, at FSU, vs NCSU. Those 3 teams are very tough matchups. NCSU will be playing bball again by then.

Ok, I took a look at the schedule. You're right, two cupcakes plus Cuse for the first three....the next
six we are only on the road for ND, Louisville and Fla.St and home for three others (none of those three are UVA, UNC, or Duke). So good point, I can see where you're coming from.. We handle ND and FL St. away and your prediction is almost a given...good job! So, we could be 8-1 or at worst 6-3 in the next 9 games. It gets tougher after that stretch, but maybe.

The fact that N.C. State and @ Clemson are being chalked up as auto-wins provides some insight into the perpetually distorted expectations of our fan base. I see Syracuse, @ ND, @ L'ville, N.C. State, @ FSU, and @ Clemson as games that are "potential challenges," to use OP's terminology. I think it's reasonable to expect 4-2 over that group, but none of those games will be complete cake walks. By saying we "should be" 10-1, do you realistically think that Pitt should be favored in either of the road games against Louisville or Notre Dame? I like the confidence, but those are two teams that have strong rosters and have historically given Dixon's teams A LOT of trouble.

I never feel good about getting ahead of ourselves and projecting outcomes. All we do is unnecessarily raise or lower expectations and, worst case, set us up for disappointment. I'm for the under-the-radar, chip-on-the-shoulder, one-game-at-a-time mantras. Enjoy what we have accomplished, look forward to the next game, hope we exceed expectations, and so on and so forth. Then we can do the same for the NCAA tournament if we're fortunate enough to get in. When the dust settles, maybe, just maybe, we cut down some nets! Okay, that's too positive, sorry!

You think we'll start out ACC play 8-1? I hope so, but that's awfully optimistic.

I expect we will go 8-3 (6-3 ACC) to be 19-4 at that point. We lose to ND and Florida St only because they are road games. We lose to Louisville because they are both better than we are and it is on the road.

I'm as excited as the next guy about what I saw yesterday, but I also remember what I saw against Purdue. Other than the 2 OOC games on that list, none are gimmes. In those other 9 games, Pitt can go anywhere from 3-6 to 8-1 and none of those results would be particularly surprising and with neither any of the 3, or that 1 being specifically identifiable.

Are RPI power rankings different than RPI rankings?

I would agree on the 6 blow outs.
But ya know what...lets just beat Western Carolina first. 1 game at a time.

I would go with Pomeroy or Sagarin for rankings.... the RPI is almost worthless.... UNTIL it comes time for the NCAAT... in which case it is only of some value.
