Pitt men versus Penn State

I watched PSU play Penn and Penn had a chance to at least tie the game. PSU dominated possession but got a late goal to break the tie. Glad to see Pitt take care of business on the road.

Any idea what happened to Laufelson (sp?) he sat the whole 2nd H and the end of the 1H. Hopefully he’s not hurt .

I was at the game last night. Pitt put on a possession clinic and PSU really had no answer most of the night. That early goal really took what was a decent crowd out of the game. Nice win.

First time I watched a game this year, even though it was only 1-0, Pitt dominated, their skill level at passing and possession is through the roof.

Jasper is playing unbelievable right now. He would be a huge loss if he's hurt. I was thinking maybe Vidovich knew they didn't need another goal and inserted Clagette for offense. Jasper is really like an extra midfielder or a wing back out there which can and has left us exposed on the counter.

I didn't think PSU was very good at all. Probably closer in overall skill to Lehigh than WVU and Akron. Would probably finish 9th or 10th in the ACC. Yet they'll finish near the top of the Big Ten. After a few minutes watching the game, I didn't see how they were going to score.

I felt Pitt managed this game very well. PSU was only going to score on a counter or Pitt mistake in the back so we didnt go crazy sending everyone up to try to get that 2nd goal.

Also, remember what I said about Mort? I like to see a local kid do well but he doesn't have anywhere near the quality of some of those other guys. Playing Dexter and Almeida out wide instead of Mort and Jacquesson has made a huge difference.

Also, the PSU student section looked and sounded great on TV. I don't know why Pitt won't make a student section for soccer. Give the kids a free t-shirt and sit them all together and make an Oakland Zooligan banner to hang in front. Seems pretty easy

I think they have? Pretty sure there’s a name too. Just not sure it’s taken off yet. Or maybe I’m dreaming it up.

I do remember Waldrum lobbying for one and some idiot on Twitter told them they should learn from the Riverhounds Steel Army. Please…

I think they did this for 1 game a few years ago but haven't tried it since. I go to most Pitt home games and I can attest that there are A LOT of Pitt students but no student section. Everyone kind of enjoys the game without really cheering or anything. Kind of weird vibe actually.

I have no idea at all, so it's just a question, who gets more fans, Pitt or the Riverhounds?

Probably hounds. It’s not hard getting to 1000 people.
If I lived in Pittsburgh, I'd probably become a fan and go sometimes, nice location, probably not hard getting in and out, I don't know what ticket prices are, but I'd think they aren't too much, and I don't care about quality of play, I like something local, even if it's minor league.

Yea they do but they probably also have the worst attendance in USL

Once again, factually incorrect. There are currently 11 USL Championship teams drawing worse than the Riverhounds. And that doesn't include the four teams that aren't reporting attendance, assumedly because they are not allowing fans.

They were indeed very good at possessing the ball but, sometimes I was just screaming at the TV for them to score one more goal to put it away. A one-goal lead is, in my book, never enough. I was getting frustrated with the lack of really good shots in the second half. With a one-goal lead any team is just a bad bounce away from a tie game.

Perhaps that is just the Pitt Guy in me coming out and expecting the worst.

Pitt passes and passes and passes looking for the perfect opportunity instead of testing the GK. It is a bit frustrating but also hard for the other team to score when they never have the ball. PSU was kinda bad IMO so I was never very worried. They seemed much worse than WVU and Akron and not terribly far off from Lehigh

Being at the game, I really appreciated watching their style of patience and building slowly from the back. Most men’s teams just blast the ball long looking for a flick and a run. Pitt really values possession and their midfield connection with the defenders is really beautiful to watch. Yes the talent has significantly improved, but Vidovich’s tactics are superior to just about everyone else.
