You're going to have a bad time if you like mustard or if you don't like alternate uniforms.
Pitt is near-certainly changing colors to the "retro" blue and gold in the near future. Using the most high-tech software (NCAA 14), I've built mock-ups of what we might be able to expect in the near future, ranging from "reasonable and conservative" to "straight frigging Oregon."
This is an image-heavy post.
Home and Away
This is so likely to happen that I almost have nothing to say about them. When Pitt puts its football students on a stage in the lobby of the Pete this spring, it's going to be to show off something just like this. The football team has already worn these uniforms (and is a respectable 0-3 in the away set) and frequently is praised as one of or the best uniform in college football. Wearing the home set in the ACC championship game may have sealed the deal as to what the football team will wear in the future.
This set would be plenty for many Panther-Lair members, but kids really like variety and mixing and matching, so here are some of the more likely options for the team. It's possible that they roll out only a Home and Away for next year, and that would be okay, but if they add more, here's what I'm expecting.
White Pants
Pitt loves wearing white pants under Pat Narduzzi, even at home when it seems like one of the least desirable options. Here, we'll see how they'd look with the standard set, home and away.
Honestly, not too bad and a definite upgrade from the current home set with white pants, where it looks, you know, kind of dumb. I could definitely see the team wearing that home set in, say, the second home game next year. Or against GT. They seem to love wearing white pants against GT.
But, hey. The current Pitt uniform set has three pairs of pants: Gold, White, and... Blue. It seems conceivable they could have a blue set for next year, too, right?
Blue Pants
Also not too bad. This adds variety and, if this was all the team had for next season, they'd have three sets for home and three for away. Each of these sets is decent enough, would stick with traditional colors, and would allow for the team to wear the "primary" Yellow-Blue-Yellow" more than once. I don't think anyone would be disappointed with this.
But I promised you more. The current Pitt team has two helmet choices. What about a blue look?
Blue Helmet
This shows the kind of variety this would add. More than a single season's worth of uniforms for the kids, and not straying too far from tradition for the grown-ups among us. Most of the looks are pretty good, too.
The team could always just wear the "current" colors once a year now as a "retro" uniform look.
Or they could go to deep left field.
Yellow Jersey
If you want Pitt to have an alternate jersey, but you want them to stick to the traditional colors, this is your best option. I think it would work better than you'd think, but only with certain combinations.
They could go full monochrome...
But I think White and Yellow work really well together.
Yellow/Yellow/Blue is alright, too, but the ones that look the worst (I'll post if you want 'em) are the tri-color looks. Just too much going on.
We can go even deeper into Nike insanity, though. The stormtrooper look is really in...
White Helmets
We're now deep into possible combinations, so I'll just post a few of my favorite looks with these helmets.
If they actually do the gold jersey, I think the white/yellow/white is the way to go. And everyone loves the stormtrooper, but is it too close to Penn State?
Straight Frigging Oregon
I don't expect Pitt to go deep into "alternate helmet stickers" like Baylor or Oklahoma State, or having a blackout set- or the Steel- but these are pretty in nowadays, and so I guess you never know. I actually think Pitt will end up going pretty tame and emphasize the yellow-blue-yellow, but I wanted to at least give a quick mock-up to what could be if the athletic department completely loses its mind when they go back to the Retro blue and gold. If there's a twist, well, maybe one of these ideas is it.
