PITTSBURGH – Hampton High School standout Liam Mignogna will join the Pitt Basketball team next season as a preferred walk-on. The 6-9 center recently concluded a senior season that saw him help lead the Talbots to a 25-5 record, runner-up finish in the WPIAL 4A Championship, and a PIAA State Championship Semifinal appearance.
Mignogna was at his best during Hampton’s WPIAL and PIAA tournament runs averaging over 20 points per game, while surpassing the 1,000-point mark for his career in his final high school game. He scored 29 points in the WPIAL Championship game against Lincoln Park at the Petersen Events Center and closed his career with a 23-point effort in the PIAA semifinals. He averaged 13.9 points and 7.8 rebounds per game, while shooting 68 percent from the field as a senior and closed out his career with 1,012 points and 620 rebounds.
Mignogna, cousin of former Pitt standout Ryan Luther, joins a recruiting class that includes highly touted prospects Brandin Cummings (6-3 – Guard) and Amdy N’Diaye (6-10 – Forward). Cummings’ Lincoln Park squad topped Mignogna in the WPIAL title game and the PIAA semifinals.
