I got to see my first look at the team this spring afterSpring break took over last week. Here are some notables.
-- It was not a big day in the way of recruits. John Volmert was there, a tight end from Missouri. Woodland Hills tight end Josh Rawlings was supposed to make an appearance but he was not there just yet. Kyi Wright appeared to be scheduled to be there today as well.
-- Thought it was interesting some coaches from Seton Hill were there observing, I know Pitt has them at their prospect camps - so it's interesting they have an open door policy with some local D2 schools.
-- As far as health, today was the first day of full pads and Jimmy Morrissey was dressed the whole way. As far as if he continued to participate fully after our viewing window- I'm not sure. He looked good though. Salahuddin is obviously not participating. Those are known situations, obviously. There are a few more bumps and bruises, but nothing worth noting too much.
-- Pitt was working on some punt returns. I thought it was interesting how involved Tim Salem and Cory Sanders were in special teams today. Like more so than it was in the fall. Obviously that's an area that all coaches are mindful of, but it seemed to be more of an emphasis from coaches other than Powell today.
-- Carson Van Lynn was working at right tackle and wearing number 59. Nothing shocking there, but that's going to be his focus for now on.
-- Kind of funny. Sometimes kickers and punters have to practice tackling and seeing Jake Scarton tackle in a group with the linebackers is quite a sight to behold. He's so much smaller than the other guys in that group.
-- Speaking of linebackers and how they size up, it's pretty noticeable Phil Campbell is thicker and looks capable of playing at LB. He's already taller and bulkier than Cam Bright, who has been a linebacker for his entire career.
-- Out of nowhere, Narduzzi pulled us (the media) on the field and allowed for us to watch a little bit of a 11 on 11 stuff live. And by a little bit, like 6-7 plays. Hey, it was something.
-- The biggest play was a deep ball down the sideline from Nick Patti to Shock Jacques-Louis who made a nice play on the ball over Paris Ford.
-- V'lique Carter operated as a running back and had a nice run up the middle and broke off a tackle. He was paired with true freshman Davis Beville in their grouping, so that backfield there is quite a contrast in size with a 5'9" running back and a 6'6" quarterback.
-- On a play action fake, John Morgan blew past the linemen for a "sack" as Beville was wearing red and could not get tackled. Otherwise, it would've been a big hit on the freshman. Morgan looks good - he'll play a lot this year. Beville is every bit the size he was billed to be, but he's a freshman in his third college practice - he's a little slow on his movements at times.
-- Like I said it was a short period to watch and take all that in. We'll have some interviews later when we talk to Narduzzi and some of the players. I believe we will be talking to Dave Borbely as well.
