Many places. but not all
IMHO, the focus on Pitt football could not have arrived a second too soon. The stars only align every so often and if you're late, you may find yourself in the AAC.
Unwittingly (or shall i say Unnittingly), Pitt has been elevated in some measure by our bald pal to the near east. he puts Pitt with OSU, MSU and U of M. Thanks jimmie.
Here is what happened and why PSU will not succeed under Franklin.
After 2 straight 7-6 seasons with the one commodity every coach craves (an experienced and talented QB), PSU finds itself fighting a 2 front war.
FRONT ONE
OSU is a beast with 4 consecutive wins in the series and PSU winning only 1 out of every 4 games.
MSU is nearly as tough a foe. And they don't look vulnerable.
Michigan gets its mojo back. and Harbaugh's bite IS AS tough as his bark.
Those 3 in division foes are brutal. Franklin may have been a mild winner at Vandy, but MEYER, DANTONIO and HARBAUGH have won big EVERYWHERE!!
Franklin is in way over his head.
FRONT TWO
James takes aim at Pitt. Pitt as in Panthers. So called "little brother" or worse.
Pitt with umpteen coaches over a handful of years. Pitt with no home field. Pitt with a stretch of unprecedented mediocrity over 3 decades long.
And guess what? He eeks out a narrow recruiting victory over PITT as Pitt shows it isn't afraid of anyone. Pitt who now has a leader as a coach. Perfect? Nope. Relentless? Yes.
PSU won't extend the series with Pitt. Shocked? Me either. The have always been afraid of losing. They won't leave 107,000...(99,000 as per official records and much less if you count butts in the seats) strong.
Will we beat PSU next year? I don't know.
But I do know this, Pitt HAS CHANGED ITS SPOTS..and isn't afraid of anyone.
PSU is afraid.
Fear is so unappealing. :(

There is no question they are not going to renew that series.

You can write down this prediction in red ink.

If Pitt can beat Penn State next year, you can count on letter to the editor after letter to the editor from Penn State fan after Penn State fan complaining about how poorly they were treated and how they will never be back (until 2018 of course, by which point they will want revenge). You can also expect the Penn State-friendly media members to bang that same drum about how Pitt needs the game and it's fans should know their place, and how Penn State is doing them a favor by playing it, and blah, blah, blah.

I'm here to tell you beforehand that it's all sour grapes and a bunch of bullshit. It's about them preserving their own sense of superiority. Without it, what are they?

Well said DR Yinzer.

I no longer go along with the "Pitt needs PSU" theory. I would ask any local sports fans......writers......talk show hosts.......to ask yourselves..

Who really needs who nowadays?

With all of the conference alignment came a lot of broken rivalries. So nobody really needs anyone in this new landscape.

Without the rivalry, what are they and what are we? They don't have a "rival" in the B10, we never had one in the BE and we will never have one in the ACC. The rivalry is essential for both programs, their fans and the schools. Despite the laughable and seemingly desperate claims of many of our posters that we are actually a "natural fit" in the ACC, the fact is we are not. As an ESPN talking head said, at the end of the day the ACC is, and has always been, a state of North Carolina conference.

This is a game that should be played every year, at worst every other. Shameful that it isn't.

WVU was a rival in the BE. But the money from the ACC gives Pitt a much better chance to succeed with recruiting budget, increase in coaches salaries and of course, Pitt be held in much higher regard than the nits despicable cover up. Yes it was a cover up nits.

Jerry DiPaola of all people commented, on the Triblive morning show that the crowd could be 50/50. As evidence, he used a conversation with his dental hygienist who said tbey are taking their 2 boys (both Cultists) and they know a lot of PSU people going.

The crowd is easy to estimate. Pitt has 30K diehards who show up for everything. They'll be there. Add in an extra 10K Pitt fans who will show up because its PSU plus the 10K students and there will be no less than 50K Pitt fans there.

I mean it goes against logic to think that 30K Pitt fans would show up in the rain to watch a game against Old Dominion but only 34K show up to watch the PSU game. The crowd will be 3/4 at least Pitt but PSU will claim otherwise.

Rivalries were formed at some point. Which means they can be formed at any point. I was a kid and enjoyed the Pitt/Penn State rivalry, but it will never be the same. With the addition of Maryland and Rutgers in the B10 they now have a chance to form a new rivalry. We have played Syracuse since the 1950's, we were in the Big East with them and we came over to the ACC with them. I believe both of us ever came back to the form of our winning years, we could be great rivals.

Rivalries are helped when both teams are good and the game is played with something on the line.

Without the rivalry, what are they and what are we? They don't have a "rival" in the B10, we never had one in the BE and we will never have one in the ACC. Good point, Pat Narduzzi is just focused on Pitt and anyone can see it. Franklin is all over the place, making pledges, promises, speeches, and that is affecting his lack of coaching. Paterno could do both!

Paterno left Penn State with a Great Program but ended the Pitt Series due to his own ego, and at left with a shamed Penn State Name that has led to its further demise in the Big Ten and only a few Penn State CULTure Fans are still in disbelief and keep being the bigger problem for Penn State.

The fear A.D. Barbour has after being bombarded by New Trustees, Alumni, and Cultists has her in fear of keeping her job, so she now follows instead of leading. One reason why O'Brien, Shoop, and Hand left too. They have talent and can coach elsewhere without such fear.

Franklin is now realizing it too, but all Penn State needs to do is find their Harbaugh, Meyer, Dantonio or Narduzzi.

Penn State can turn it around on a dime with a real leader as soon as the Criminal Cases, Civil Lawsuits, and Divided University and that may happen after 2016 to 2018. A real Leader and Great Coach will bring back the Pitt Series too.

Not playing every year is not ideal but we certainly haven't needed them in 15 years and they can they say the same of us.
Wow, right on....let see Pitt built new facilities, has gotten into the ACC, and did it without playing Penn State, looks like Paterno Plan did not work?

Many Penn State Fans are jealous that Pitt is in the ACC and they have less winning in the Big Ten.

The crowd will never be 50/50. Hasn't been vs. ND or WVU, and won't be against Penn St. Yes, Pitt has a 'core' of fans that always go, some more that sometimes go, and some others that go to the big games. This game is special, always was and always will be. Pitt fans will come out of the woodwork to get tickets for this game. It has been said that there possibly will not be a single-game sale for PSU. So, an unknown number of Nit fans may buy season tix just to get that game, but it will not be an extraordinary number. My guess that there will be 10,000 or so Penn State fans there, and some of those will have gotten tickets from Pitt fans. If the tickets were available, then PSU fans would be there, no doubt, and they will sell out Beaver Stadium in '17, but Heinz just doesn't have enough seats to accommodate all that will want to attend this game.

Agree!
WVU badly wants to play PITT every year.

PITT wants to play Penn State every year with no fear.

Penn Staters just complain about getting beat by Michigan, Ohio State, Michigan State, Iowa, Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Northwestern when playing them in most years?

Yet, BWI Cultists hate and talk about PITT every day and refuse to call PITT a Rival?

The next 4 years will be grand to watch, enjoy, and maybe better minds will prevail, once Penn State moves on and is free of the Penn State Football Scandal.

Good comments and analysis. however, I see it measuring the interest of Penn State Fans wanting to play Pitt every year will be seen if Beaver Stadium sells out the Pitt Game?

I went to as an Invited Guest to Nebraska 2002 and Notre Dame 2007 Games and they showed respect towards those Programs based on sell outs and white outs, and if the same happens when PITT plays in 2017 at Beaver, well....one way to know how much Penn State Fans love playing PITT will be seen like when they came out to see the Lions playing NOTRE DAME and NEBRASKA. They can't deny what they do and those actions will be proof they cannot refute?

Yep……no way PSU wants to put PITT on the schedule!

There will a full list of reasons that are handed out to memorize…….it’s easier for them to remember if they list them and circulate such list at the rituals ( meetings)

Wasn't barnes quoted as saying Pitt is "no further along" with penn State in trying to extend the series?
Translated...she isn't returning my calls.
Now you know why PSU is dropping their capacity by 10,000. Maybe thye will tarp seats if they keep playing Georgia State, Akron (we wise up and get them off ours)Idaho and appalachian State.
If the polar icecap can melt, so too can the PSU brand...and it is melting.

Yeah, and every reason on that list will be because they are so wonderful and we are so pathetic. I can't stand their unmitigated arrogance. I can never understand how a group of people can be so arrogant with absolutely no reason to be. They have a 107,000 seat stadium and had a coach for 45 year and somehow that is a good reason to be arrogant. I just don't get it.

Unbelievable...look the last Pitt PSU game at best had 8k or so...that made it at about 15%.... It's never ever been 50-50....not in the 70s...early or late 80s...when I was doing drumline...not in the 90s either and as I said not that 12-0 game....ND never gets anywhere close to 50-50 either...I have no idea where these fictions come from...& yes plenty of the fair weather Pitt fans show for these types of games.

You are correct from what I read. Attendance is tougher and tougher to maintain in CFB and NFL. The bigger Stadiums except for those going to CFB Playoffs are having trouble to filling seats and when they do not have full capacity they take in less since costs are still the same.

Penn State has dropped to annual 100,000, and that is up since the Sanctions, but down from Full Capacity.

The younger alumni are not buying the season tickets being dropped by older alumni that are retiring and dying.

Known as the Nittany Lions Pride before the fall and no longer have that Swagger based on Slogans?

With all of these arguments with PoSU fans on who is better. Throw in the fact they like to call us "little brother" and paint us jealous. Can anyone on here actually think of ONE thing you would trade with them? Pitt has more titles, but theirs are more recent but still so long ago that they are about as relevant as our last one. They had a coach who stayed 45 years and built the program only to have everything he built tarnished by the scandal. They are in a conference that give them less of an ability to win than we have with ours. They have a packed stadium on game day but you know, I don't mind the atmosphere at Heinz. I'm there to watch Pitt play football, not count the fans.

I never understood the more fans the better mentality but that is what thier program has become. I like Heinz with the restaurants nearby and I don't have to park in the yoder's front yard either. Both programs are similar in ability right now.

My prediction is the crowd will be like Pitt vs. Cincinnati game....obviously just replace the Cincy crowd with the Nitters

The media spin: If Pitt wins, it'll be because of the lasting effect of the sanctions on UPS; if UPS wins, it'll be a "glorious victory" accomplished in spite those horrible sanctions. Never mind that the Nits have five players invited to the 2016 NFL combine, while Pitt has just one.

So much for the sanctions....

If you haven't ever been to BWI, PSU is Michigan's bitch. Their delusions of grandeur are a thing of beauty to behold at times. I watched MSU fans whine over Michigan for the first 40 yrs of my life, and they never came close to the level of pathetic exhibited on PSU boards daily.

The amount of conflicting delusions is truly something one must witness to believe.

They will talk about not being to keep up with the Bucks and Michigan as they aren't as big of a name, not as much money etc. Then in another thread they will talk about being a greater program than Michigan, and on par with the Bucks. I mean which is it?

It must be a bitch to know that you are relegated to 4th, at best, in your own division. I don't see Pitt having that problem.

I don't go over there because it is too depressing. It makes me sad that there are people that stupid in the world and even sadder when I realize some of them vote and make decisions which may affect our lives.

So I try to never go over there.

It must be more of a bitch to know your school is no longer known for football, but for something horrible.
