Warning: Crazy SMF scenario. This has less than a 1% chance of happening so if you dont like these, click out.

WVU - pretty straight forward. Win 4 "coin-flip" games (@ OKST, @ TX, OU, Baylor) and they are in. They have a decent shot at doing that. Their defense is one of the best in college football.

PSU - their path isnt as difficult as it may seem. They should finish 10-2. They play 2 HS teams (Purdue, RU) and Iowa and MSU are at home and those teams arent that good this year. @ IU is their best chance at a loss and that could be tricky.

If PSU goes 10-2, they need Michigan to lose 2. @ MSU in a rivalry game is no gimme. They also go to Iowa which should be a win but in Iowa City, that's not automatic. The 2nd Mich loss could come in Columbus. Then PSU wins the East and their game vs Nebraska or Wisky could be a quarterfinal game.

Pitt - they have the toughest road. They would need to win out and have UNC lose to either Duke, GT, or NCSU. Then beat Louisville or Clemson in Orlando.

With "preference given to conferenc champions," I dont see any 11-1 non-champions jumping them. Although they'd need Washington to lose the P12 Championship game.

At least you are starting to acknowledge your crazy thoughts ahead of time. This is a good start.
