From Pitt:

The Panthers' ACC Player of the Week streak continues.

Pitt junior linebacker Matt Galambos and freshman strong safety Jordan Whitehead were honored by the Atlantic Coast Conference today for their performances in the Panthers' 26-19 victory over Virginia. Galambos was named the league's Linebacker of the Week, while Whitehead received the ACC's weekly rookie honor.

The Panthers have had at least one player honored by the ACC each week this season. In total, eight Pitt players have earned a league weekly award in 2015.

Galambos (Collingdale, Pa./The Haverford School) had two quarterback sacks and a momentum-changing interception return against Virginia. With Pitt holding a 17-10 halftime lead, the Cavaliers opened the second half by driving to the Panthers’ 34-yard line. Galambos ended the threat with an interception, returning it 51 yards to the UVA 20. Pitt capitalized two plays later with a touchdown.

Galambos’ return was the longest by a Pitt player in five years. His two sacks went for 15 yards in losses and he was credited with an 11-yard sack on Virginia’s final possession of the game. Galambos has 31 tackles, five TFLs and a team-high four sacks on the season.

Whitehead (Aliquippa, Pa./Central Valley) collected a game-high 12 tackles (seven solo) and was a force defending the run and the pass in Pitt’s victory. The true freshman leads Pitt’s nationally ranked defense with 41 stops on the year. He is averaging 8.2 tackles per game, which ranks ninth (tied) in the ACC. Whitehead is the only freshman among the league’s top-24 tacklers.

Galambos and Whitehead are key players for a Pitt defensive unit that ranks seventh nationally, surrendering just 264.6 yards per contest. The Panthers are off to their best start since 2009 with a 4-1 overall record and 2-0 ACC mark. Pitt plays at Georgia Tech (2-4, 0-3) this week. The 12:30 p.m. game will be televised on the ACC Network and shown in Pittsburgh on WTAE-TV, Channel 4.
