I think that most agree Pitt's recruiting has struggled over the last few years. Blair and Young were the last true stars we had. Adams was an anomaly.

So if I were Dixon ( and Barnes) I would review my entire recruiting philosophy.

I would first review all the players Pitt went after over the last five years and see if they turned out to be good players whether or not they were at Pitt. If for the most part they were good then I would look to see why. Pitt didn't land them. If they were not the right players that is a different problem.

I am assuming Pitt mostly eliminates players west of the Mississippi for obvious reasons. It also appears we do not look for one and done players unless Pitt has some special relationship (Adams) While I understand
this reasoning I would target at least one of these type players.

While I hear on this board we should recruit NYC or Philly I am not sure that is productive since talent changes over time. I might consider focusing on some of the Basketball factories, building relationships.
One thing I do not see and I may be wrong is to really target someone you covet and recruit item much harder. This was what the great Al McQuire did at Marquette. He personally recruited the star for that year.
Dixon should do the same. Roy Chipman did it with Charles Smith. I think he went to like 30 games his senior year.

Then I would look at my assistants that are leading the recruiting charge and look at the results. If you are primarily a recruiter then you have to be held accountable.

Finally I look at Pitt's Pro's and cons regarding recruiting.

Pros

1.Playing in the ACC. Look at this year's tournament. The ACC is cleaning up and we are already defending champions. So you can sell to kids if you want to play against the best come to Pitt.

2. The Pete. Still a great venue.

3 Pittsburgh. A lot of kids would rather live in the city.

4 our recent history. Yes we still have a lot to sell. Struggling but still solid.

Cons

1 Playing in the ACC. Not exactly an Eastern league and Pitt is in a gray zone.
Also playing against Duke, NC,Louisville etc is tough. But somehow Virginia is thriving.
So can we.

2 Not playing the AAU games. I don't pretend to know how that works but As a Pitt alum I would rather play fair. Have to identify kids that do not fall in this category.

3 Style. Not every team is Kentucky. Michigan State plays its own style. Virginia plays its own style.
While I would like Pitt to play their own brand, I do think you have to adapt to your talent each year.
I think style is a cop out.

4 Pittsburgh is not a basketball hotbed. This is tough when you always have to go out of your backyard to get players. You do need to keep any decent talent from Pittsburgh. Pitt has done this.

The conclusion is Pitt should do an in depth review of their recruiting. The lack of the proverbial go,to,guy
has hurt Pitt the last few years. The good news is you only need one or two special players to turn the corner. What if Pitt had Malcom Brogdan from Virginia on their team this year. The bad news is without these players Pitt is going nowhere fast. It is time to look in the mirror. Maybe Barnes will help.
Maybe Narduzzi could help.

Dixon always talks about getting better each day. He needs to do the same.

You don't think they do this already
It is one thing to say you do it, and another to actually do it. How does hiring the #3 asst at UMass with connections to Detroit make sense? I hope he proves me wrong and lands a bunch of players, but it did not make any sense to me. They should have hired a guy like Steve DeMeo.

Agree with most of what you have to say. I think the recruiting needs to be more national. I know the kid from Texas was a bust a few years back but somehow Jason Matthews was convinced to come to Pitt from LA. There have to be Chicago, Detroit, LA--any big city kids who might consider Pitt if they were recognized early on and the relationship was built.
I think Jamie has to recognize his current assistants are not getting the job done. Contrary to what other posters think I feel Pitt can attract top-quality recruits. I just think the approach, philosophy and geographic target area is wrong. The NYC kids we use to get were an integral part of our success and it seems like there is no effort to recruit there.
The university and the city have alot to offer as well as playing in a great conference--there is no reason for kids not to give Pitt any consideration.
Just my 2 cents.

Let's break it down for guards, shall we. Perhaps this post should get pinned.

Levance Fields-Averaged 18 points per game and 7 assists per game in high school over a 4 year career. NY state player of the year. Averaged 27 points per game and 6 assists per game as a senior. 2 Time 1st team All State selection. Won the CHSAA league champion, the toughest high school basketball league in the country at that time. Lost in the State finals to a team that featured 2 Top 10 Nationally rated recruits. Team finished Nationally ranked in the Top 20.

Brad Wanamaker-Player of the year in one of Top 5 high school basketball leagues in the country. Averaged 17 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists per game. All Catholic State Champion and MVP. Alhambra Tournament Champion and MVP. Manhandled Austin Freeman and Scoop Jardine in 1 on 1 matchups. Team finished Nationally ranked in the Top 10

Ashton Gibbs-Newark State Player of the year. Averaged 22 points per game, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists while shooting 48% from 3. MVP of NJSCA Classic. State Champion leading his team to a 31-1 record.

--------------------------------------------

Recent guards

Josh Newkirk-Played in 1A, a weak league. Averaged 15 points per game in high school. 20-9 record in high school, nothing to brag about. Team isn't ranked in the Top 1000 in high school.

James Robinson-Played in the WCAC, a strong league. Averaged 11 points per game and 6 assists per game in high school. 1st Team All Met. WCAC and Alhambra Champion. 1 or 2 of his teammates are in the NBA from Dematha. Decent player, but not great player. Good manager, but he didnt win the games in the playoffs, he only helped the team.

Cam Wright-Division 2, not 1, player of the year in Ohio, not a good league. Averaged 19 points per game. Never won a state title. 22-5 record as a senior, 17-6 record as a junior. Not bad, but nothing to brag about. Again, played in a weaker league

Isiah Epps-Didnt start for Hargrave as a senior. Hargrave was really good, but he was very inconsistent. Averaged 15 points and 6 rebounds at Plainfield. Nothing to brag about.

John Johnson-Played in a weak high school league. 95-23 record in high school, not bad, not great. Averaged 18 point and 4 assists per game. LCA finished ranked #10 in the state as a senior, again, not a great team. Played in class A, again, weak league.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Are you starting to see the difference between being a State Player of the year, being a State Champion, winning prestigious tournaments, playing against great teams, and posting good stats vs the latter?

Justice Kithcart-Averaged 26 points per game, 7 assists per game, 5 rebounds per game, and 3 steals per game. State Champion and MVP. Super 64 National Champion and MVP, the top high school basketball tournament in the entire country, it is the equivalent to the NCAA Tournament. 2 Time 1st Team All State. I have not heard who the state player of the year is yet, but I dont know how it isn't Kithcart after he destroyed a lineup of Duke and Kentucky recruits and completely dominated and took over the playoffs. And the word dominated is an understatement.

For me personally I don't care where kids are ranked. In the last 10-15 years Sam Young was one of our best players and Dixon said he was ranked like the 1000 player in high school. Like you I like kids from good programs but that is tougher now with all the basketball factories. Real leagues are harder to judge.

As far as some of the comments about does Pitt really do an in depth review I don't know. I do know we need to get kids like Blair, young, and Fields and even with that talent we didn't make the Final Four.
It's tough.

It is really hard to judge yourself effectively. Maybe Barnes should sit down with the staff and do the last five year review of recruiting. I just don't see why we seem to whiff on so many recruits..
Something isn't right.
