So, these video vinnettes from the "vault" have a title card that says "From The Vault / Pitt / Since 1898". See in video in the Pitt football tweet below....

The school was founded in 1787.
It gained university status in 1819.
The first varsity sport was played in 1869 (baseball).
The first non-official football game was organized in 1889 and the first varsity team fielded in 1890. Also, 1890 is the earliest reference can find for the university's blue and gold color scheme and official yell, "Alleghenee, genack, genack".
The university was renamed to the "University of Pittsburgh" in 1908.
The Panther was adopted as a mascot in 1909.
The first performance of 'Hail to Pitt' occurred in 1910.
So, what is from 1898?

I assume they are counting the years when they were known as the WUP’s?

1898 is the first year the Athletics Dept decided to change colors and wear throwbacks, even though university had only ever worn one uniform.

Pitt should schedule Fordham just for stuff and giggles......w throwbacks of course.
