Excerpt:

If you are wondering how heavily Pitt will rely on sophomore safety Jordan Whitehead this season, know this: Coaches admonish him even when someone else makes a mistake at practice. “Trying to get me to be more of a leader,” he said.....“I can always do better,” said Whitehead, the first freshman in school history to lead the team in tackles (109).....t's not easy building an elite defense, and smart, talented players such as Whitehead need to carry the bulk of the load — no matter the amount of pressure.........Players are eager to tackle a schedule that could shove Pitt among the most powerful teams in the nation, if they win some of those tough games. But Whitehead said coach Pat Narduzzi puts a stop to such talk if it goes beyond the opener. “Anytime we talk about Penn State,” Whitehead said, “he says, ‘Don't overlook Villanova (Sept. 3).' ”......“Last year was the first time (Pitt employed Narduzzi's defensive scheme),” he said. “They know what we can do now......Narduzzi and defensive coordinator Josh Conklin have designed a defense that is simple in its execution and therefore potentially effective because players know where they are supposed to be. Plus, it hasn't changed much from last season.“That's one of the good things about coach's defense: It's very sound,” said linebacker Mike Caprara, one of those eight seniors. “There are no gray areas. No matter if it's a spread offense or a pro offense, a lot of the roles for the D-line, linebackers and the secondary don't really change. That's what you like to see as a player.” “The whole defense has way more pressure than we had last year. I like it. We have a lot of good teams we are playing. Putting pressure on us now is going to help us.”.........
