I watched a lot of basketball since Thursday and it was clear to me the difference in this years Pitt team to the teams that made the dance and specifically the sweet sixteen boils down to this.
1 Athleticism. Most of these teams just have more athletic players than Pitt. It is hard to name one Pitt player that is an elite athlete.
Actually Pitt has very few over the Howland Dixon Era. I would say Sam Young was the best. After watching Heron on tape he seems like a kid that could bring a new level of athleticism to Pitt.
2. strength. watching these teams they all seem to be way stronger than Pitt. Michigan State looks like a football team out there.
The Pitt team this year really has no bangers. Maybe Manigault will bring some strength to this team. And Nix.
3 Speed. Especially at the guard position. The guards from Duke, Michigan State, WVu and Louisville make our guards look like they are running in deep sand.
Some times you have to pick your poison. I don't want athletic kids like JJ Moore who can't play but it seems like at least 16 other teams have these kids.
We need to recruit better. It doesn't take much to look at the other successful programs to see what is working. We just can't compete without athletic players, strong players or fast players. Not to have any is telling.
