Pitt v Indiana Game Thread

Indiana is dominating. Poor defense on that PK-half the Pitt players stood around after the save, leaving the shooter an uncontested shot on goal.

I think IU surprised them that they came out and played at the start. They were the better team during that stretch and earned a PK. Now they can park the bus. Its going to be very difficult for us to score.

Indiana isn’t parking the bus. They are all in with getting it to #17 and letting him go. They are also putting significant pressure on our back line when trying to play out the back.

It is inconceivable, inconceivable I say, that a team might play differently now than they did a couple seasons ago!

I dont know what Gilman was doing there. 17 seconds left, you just have to get to the ball and play it out for a corner. Not sure why he gave up on it and allowed Mihalic to turn. That said, Van Der Sar has to save that.

This game reminds me so much of USA/Netherlands. 9th minute goal. Never really felt like we were in. Dagger before the half. Game.

👆👆👆This is exactly right. Indiana has dominated this game from the very start. They know the weakness of our team is the back 4 and they are pressing then every time the touch the ball. Gilman is our best fullback and the first 3 times he touched the ball they pressed him and he lost it. That set the tone.

We keep trying to build from the back and we can’t against them. Every time we do get the ball to someone in the offensive third of the pitch, he is smothered. Jacquesson has two defenders on him every time he gets the ball. If he happens to beat them both, which he has done a couple of times, there is another defender waiting for him. He hasn’t beaten that third one. Noel has been playing with a guy glued to him. They are physical and body us up every chance they get. We have had one decent chance in 45 minutes.

On that second goal, Indiana had two players in front of goal. We had one defender. They missed the first pass for what could have been an easy goal, but then the attacker who got the ball had so much time and space that he could have ordered lunch before he shot. It was a terrible effort by the GK to let that go in from a very bad angle but an equally bad effort by the defense in allowing them to have players unmarked in front of the goal.

Realistically, this game was over before the second goal.

Indiana played the first half to win. The PK was the result of Indiana putting significant pressure on our defense. Pitt better find a way

Looks like I picked the right night to drink a lot. Local brewery had this Belgian style with high abv. Just crushed a growler and the game isn’t even close to being over.

Great season boys. Wish it would have ended better but still a ton of fun.

They did better than I thought. Will be interesting to see what Noel, Mirkovic, and Jacquesson decide. I expect they get drafted but could return if they dont sign MLS contracts. Japser only made $84K last year so unless you are a top pick, you're really better off getting the extra year of education, free food, free housing, cost of attendance, etc.

Not a good way to end. IU exploited our weakness. Still, I'd rather get that far and lose than get knocked out early, or, not make it at all. Another fantastic season.

Hail to Pitt!

I expect to get "Big Tenned" today too in Volleyball. The Big 10 is Pitt's kryptonite.

Anyways....here is my expert soccer analysis. Anytime I turned on the game, I saw more red jerseys near the action than I did blue. There. Make of that what you will.

Is it getting "Big Tenned" if Pitt losses in VB today, or just a case of games at this stage being really really hard?

Agree. The red jerseys were just swarming around Pitt ballhandlers, and there were no or very tight passing lanes. It took Pitt too long to adjust, and then gave up 2 lame goals on top of it. The hole they dug themselves was just too deep.

Not only that, but last night we were the unseeded team playing the seeded team, and tonight we will be the two seed playing on the home court of the one seed.

Still......you got to beat the best to be the best at some point. Right? It is not unheard of. For example, Pitt beat #1 Kentucky. Kentucky is not the Big 10.

So if we beat a number one seeded Big Ten team and then lost to a number 13 seed SEC team that would somehow be better?

You are absolutely right, at some point you are going to have to beat some really good teams to win the championship. And there are almost always really good teams in the Big Ten in nearly every sport. Just like there are really good teams in the ACC. There isn't anything special about Big Ten teams, just as there isn't anything special about ACC teams or SEC teams or PAC12 teams. If you want to win you have to beat good teams, and those come from all over the place.

Just saying Joe. Big 10 is our kryptonite.

Last year the women's volleyball team beat two Big Ten teams in the NCAA tournament. The year before they beat one. So the volleyball team's record against Big Ten team in the last four NCAA tournaments is 3-1.

Kryptonite!

I gotta agree, recruits. Too many recent losses to BiG teams in meaningful games.

I hope the ladies can reverse this with a win in Madison tonight.

Our soccer team looked lost and overmatched last night.

H2P!
Yeah. 2 years ago we were better than Indiana.

Last night, they came out and took it to us. They were and are well coached. They pressed us and turned us over for 12 minutes. Then when they got the goal, they let us have the ball and defended the final 3rd. We couldn’t find the goal and then gave up the 2nd. At that point I went to bed. Lol.

If we get that one goal in the first half that required a good save by the keeper, then the game changes a bit and then maybe we are able to settle in and then get to halftime and potentially make an adjustment. But it wasn’t meant to be.

I’m not convinced that result happens more than 5 out of 10 times. But who knows.
