Pitt Volleyball vs Wisconsin - 8PM

That was just incredible to overcome blowing the 19-12 lead in the first set and Wiscy storming back in the fifth to take a 13-12 lead with Pitt gutting out three straight points to win.

Volleyball has to be one of the most nerve wracking sports to watch if the teams are evenly match and you have a interest in the outcome.

If that didn't get your pulse moving as a Pitt fan, than I don't know what would.
Smf is on suicide watch

Pitt's biggest volleyball fan, Sean Miller Fan, is so excited tonight that he is speechless.

Sorry guys. I was looking at the live stats while transiting an airport. Saw match point listed and thought it was over. If they would have lost, I would have owned it.

Dan Fisher is well worth whatever they are paying him.
One of Heather's most impressive accomplishments thus far was keeping Fisher at Pitt. It was Steve Pederson that initially hired him, but Penn State went after him BIG time last season. At one point it looked like it was a done deal. If Pitt loses Fish, Pitt volleyball is back to being mediocre immediately and PSU is probably in the Final Four this year. Keeping Fish, extending Vidovich (hired by Barnes), and landing Waldrum (although he pretty much came to her) are her biggest staff accomplishments thus far, with a few more where the jury is still deliberating. Have to keep all three of them happy and at Pitt, as they are all major, big time coaches in their sports. Jay and Randy came to Pitt already with that standing; Fish has earned it while at Pitt. Pitt has never in its history had a cadre of coaches in its Olympic Sports like that and it is turning Pitt into a Big Boy athletic department with an overall culture of winning.

So much for that early season 2-3 upset to San Diego that rang all those early alarm bells. The Torero's just made their first final four by upsetting 1 seed Stanford on their home floor.

2 of Pitt's 3 losses this season were to teams in the Final Four. The other loss was to the CAA champion Towson that was in the NCAA tourney and finished 29-2.

Yeah that loss to Towson probably is the reason we had to play Wisconsin at Wisconsin yesterday. But maybe we would have had to anyway. Glad it didn’t hurt us!!

What made this game so crazy at the end is when Wisconsin flipped the momentum and jumped ahead like 12-11. Wisconsin had crawled back and looked to be headed for a win. I don’t know how Pitt did it, but man did they hang in there and absolutely shock that arena. I was at a party and made them turn it on but had no volume so I didn’t get to hear anything. I could only imagine how loud that place got and all of a sudden dead silent. What makes volleyball so entertaining is the nonstop action the point for point setup, the players celebrating and having fun during the entire match. It’s kind a crazy rollercoaster of emotions for the players and fans. That was probably the most I ever watched a women’s volleyball match. And holy crap does it hook you in. What else makes it awesome, no flopping, nonstop strategy, crazy athleticism, and complete team involvement on every live ball. The equivalent in basketball would be an alleyhoop on every play followed by a slam dunk over two defenders.

To echo just about everybody on here what a job by coach Fisher,we gotta keep him here and a question to Paco do you think it's going to be tough to keep him here as he's probably already a hot commodity to many higher revenue schools

I mean, I think if we were able to fend off PSU we'll be able to fend off anyone else.

If we kept him last off-season, so we are going to be in good shape keeping him if he wants to stay in the collegiate ranks. Penn State is one of the all-time historical programs in college volleyball and we fended them off. Pitt was Fish's first D1 job (he came from the NAIA ranks...a great, somewhat reach hire by Pederson that no one can argue against, as was Howland), and he built Pitt's program from pretty much the ground up, and is going to get a shiny new volleyball facility in the near future. Pitt has shown great support and commitment.

I've always worried he may want to go back to West Coast since he is from Southern California. But so far, he is clearly happy at Pitt and Pitt has retained him. He's been a hot commodity for several years.

The other big concern will be whenever there is a change in his boss. A big reason people stay at any job is the people they work with and for. This is what happened with Dixon, new boss who didn't support him; the results of which are 6 straight losing seasons and counting. So Heather deserves much credit for his retention thus far.

Softball is on the the flip side of the coin. Arguably one of Heather's biggest mistakes was pushing out Holly Aprile. Pitt softball has much forward momentum and it was crushed by that move and subsequent questionable hire.

It seems to me, that every athletic director that Pitt hires, they can't help but meddle unconstructively in the sport that is in their personal background: Pederson in football, Barnes in basketball, Heather in softball.

There is a reason that Nebraska averages over 8K a game, Wiscy over 7.5K, Minnesota 5K. It is a great spectator sport. The only problem is the lack of parity in the ACC still. Most matches are sweeps for a top 5-10 power like Pitt. But the ACC is growing the sport quickly.

As is, Pitt finished 3rd in the RPI, Wiscy 4th, and Stanford 5th. Pitt was the one program in the RPI top 5 not to get a 1 seed. Last year Pitt finished #2 in the RPI and ended up with a 3 seed. In 2019, Pitt finished 4th in the RPI and got a sixth seed. Maybe we swap seeds with Louisville with one less loss, but I get the impression they weren't giving the upstart ACC two 1 seeds no matter what. The ACC is opening eyes though with Pitt and Lousville making the final 4 in back to back seasons. Going on the road at defending champ Wiscy and snapping their home win streak is eye opening for some I'm sure.

I’ve been involved in girls and Women’s soccer for over two decades now, and what strikes me is how different the two cultures are. In volleyball they all wear hair ribbons throughout their youth and then in the college game they are all singing and dancing during timeouts. You don’t see either of that in soccer. Girls will be girls of course and sing and dance in practice and the locker room. But after kickoff you don’t see any of that stuff.

I agree it's a great spectator sport. It's also one that you can't fully appreciate on TV because it's so much better in person.
