I attended Game 2 of the baseball doubleheader against Duke yesterday 3/22/14 ..... here is what I think I saw ....
- Cool weather .... temp was 40 degrees at the end of the game with some wind.
- Long game .... 4:09 ..... 1st game started at 1 PM and 2nd game ended at 8:54 PM (I didn't attend the 1st game)..... a lot of pitches, a lot of pitching changes, a lot of base runners, slow play, managers having discussions with the umps, etc.
- Official attendance = 175 (I estimated about 200).
- Pro scouts present and 2 of them stayed to the very end..... they were watching several pitchers..... Wotherspoon was throwing fastballs at 90-91 mph, Zeuch 93 mph, Mersing 90-92 mph, Curtis 92-93 mph ..... they took a break and didn't have the radar gun on "Teke" (Danielczyk)..... Pitt has some good arms on the pitching staff !
- Wotherspoon had control problems ..... threw 105 pitches in 3.2 innings and walked 3 batters.
- Zeuch, a 6'7" freshman pitcher, who had trouble as a 3rd starter earlier this season actually looked good to me yesterday ..... he came in and got the 3rd out in the 4th and pitched a scoreless 5th ..... his fastball was 93 mph and he has a pretty good curve ..... I would have liked to see him pitch longer but Pitt scored 5 runs in the bottom of the 5th and that half inning must have taken 30-40 minutes in cold weather with Zeuch sitting on the bench so Jordano brought in Mersing a freshman from Montour to pitch the 6th.
- Mersing gave up 3 singles to the 1st 3 batters he faced and so he was replaced by Danielcyzk ...... still Mersing looks like he has a good arm and could be a good pitcher as he matures and gets some experience..... he got behind all 3 batters he faced and that was a problem.
- "Teke" Danielcyzk came in and pitched well .... he hit the 1st batter that he faced in relief of Mersing but then struck out the next 2 batters and got a ground out for the last out ..... he then pitched a scoreless 7th inning.
- Luke Curtis came in and pitched 2 scoreless innings to close the game ..... INTERESTINGLY, a Pitt fan came over to the two scouts that were still there when Curtis came in to start the 8th inning ..... it sounded like the Pitt fan may have had a son that played for Pitt and knew a lot of other scouts, knew a lot of prospects in the Pittsburgh high school area, may be a coach, I'm not sure as I couldn't hear the entire conversation..... in any event, the scouts were listening to him and he told them to watch Luke Curtis ..... one scout said that he had seen Curtis once last year ....... the 2 scouts were cold with the weather and about ready to leave but when this fan told them to watch Curtis, they got their radar guns out of their bags and clocked his fastball at 92-93 mph and kept watching Curtis and started writing notes about him and got cameras out and took video on him ..... they seemed somewhat impressed and it seemed to me that the Pitt fan got them interested.
I'll have more thoughts/expand on my thoughts about the team later today but my wife is yelling at me right now to get ready to go to the Pens game .... LOL!
