I attended Game 2 of the baseball doubleheader against Duke yesterday 3/22/14 ..... here is what I think I saw ....

- Cool weather .... temp was 40 degrees at the end of the game with some wind.

- Long game .... 4:09 ..... 1st game started at 1 PM and 2nd game ended at 8:54 PM (I didn't attend the 1st game)..... a lot of pitches, a lot of pitching changes, a lot of base runners, slow play, managers having discussions with the umps, etc.

- Official attendance = 175 (I estimated about 200).

- Pro scouts present and 2 of them stayed to the very end..... they were watching several pitchers..... Wotherspoon was throwing fastballs at 90-91 mph, Zeuch 93 mph, Mersing 90-92 mph, Curtis 92-93 mph ..... they took a break and didn't have the radar gun on "Teke" (Danielczyk)..... Pitt has some good arms on the pitching staff !

- Wotherspoon had control problems ..... threw 105 pitches in 3.2 innings and walked 3 batters.

- Zeuch, a 6'7" freshman pitcher, who had trouble as a 3rd starter earlier this season actually looked good to me yesterday ..... he came in and got the 3rd out in the 4th and pitched a scoreless 5th ..... his fastball was 93 mph and he has a pretty good curve ..... I would have liked to see him pitch longer but Pitt scored 5 runs in the bottom of the 5th and that half inning must have taken 30-40 minutes in cold weather with Zeuch sitting on the bench so Jordano brought in Mersing a freshman from Montour to pitch the 6th.

- Mersing gave up 3 singles to the 1st 3 batters he faced and so he was replaced by Danielcyzk ...... still Mersing looks like he has a good arm and could be a good pitcher as he matures and gets some experience..... he got behind all 3 batters he faced and that was a problem.

- "Teke" Danielcyzk came in and pitched well .... he hit the 1st batter that he faced in relief of Mersing but then struck out the next 2 batters and got a ground out for the last out ..... he then pitched a scoreless 7th inning.

- Luke Curtis came in and pitched 2 scoreless innings to close the game ..... INTERESTINGLY, a Pitt fan came over to the two scouts that were still there when Curtis came in to start the 8th inning ..... it sounded like the Pitt fan may have had a son that played for Pitt and knew a lot of other scouts, knew a lot of prospects in the Pittsburgh high school area, may be a coach, I'm not sure as I couldn't hear the entire conversation..... in any event, the scouts were listening to him and he told them to watch Luke Curtis ..... one scout said that he had seen Curtis once last year ....... the 2 scouts were cold with the weather and about ready to leave but when this fan told them to watch Curtis, they got their radar guns out of their bags and clocked his fastball at 92-93 mph and kept watching Curtis and started writing notes about him and got cameras out and took video on him ..... they seemed somewhat impressed and it seemed to me that the Pitt fan got them interested.

I'll have more thoughts/expand on my thoughts about the team later today but my wife is yelling at me right now to get ready to go to the Pens game .... LOL!

Goalie:

I was at Game 2 as well although I left early.

You planning on going to one of the games next weekend?

...You are the goalieman after all.

With Georgia Tech taking their most recent series against UNC (a team we gave one up to), we got our work cut out.

I like that our core guys' bats are starting to warm up. Still want more from Casey in this GT series. I like what Frabasilio is doing lately with the bat.

Mersing 90-92 mph???

I know this kid saw him pitch for Montour last two years NO way does he throw 90-92 mph more like 85-87 mph MAX.

My son is a junior in H.S. and throws harder than Mersing right now..

The fastball speeds that I quoted for all the pitchers were right off two different pro scouts radar guns ..... maybe I made a mistake about Mersing but I don't think so .... all the Pitt pitchers were 90+ mph on their guns except Danielcyzk who they didn't time..... I'll see in the future if I can confirm Mersing's fastball speed .... I know you've seen Mersing before, so maybe you are right.

I think that we need to get more power/extra base hits out of the middle of the line up.

I'd like to go Saturday and/or Sunday but I'm not sure if I can make the games yet..... I'm going to try.

Further OBSERVATIONS ........

- I was impressed by the Duke starting pitcher in game 2 of the DH ...... big kid about 6'6" whose fastball was timed at 94-95 mph on the pro scout radar guns ..... he faced 6 batters in the 1st two innings ..... struck out 5 of them and the other was a line out to 2nd base ...... he only went two innings and never came out for the 3rd inning ..... not sure why but I was glad.

- Offensively, we had, I believe 11 hits and scored 8 runs but we had no extra base hits ..... we need some players in the middle of the line up to get some extra base hits.

- Jordano is the 3rd base coach when Pitt bats.

- Pitt dugout became very animated in the 5th inning when we scored 5 runs ...... really seemed to create some energy for the team.

- Defensively, we are pretty solid in the outfield but I'm not as convinced about the infield ..... we only made one error but it just didn't look to me like our infielders were getting a good jump on the ball right off the Duke bats..... it was just one game but I didn't see anyone in our infield that would go in the MLB draft.... we'll see how they play and develop in the future..... Manny Pazos caught the 1st 8 innings ...... he was solid behind the plate, has a decent arm and even picked a runner off 1st ..... he had a bloop single to RF, walked once, and scored two runs but on the season is still hitting well below the Mendoza line ..... Tyler Albert caught the 9th and not much you could tell about his abilities in just one inning.

- There were about maybe 40 Duke fans at the game ..... typical visiting fans.

- 3 game home weekend series against Georgia Tech next weekend ..... should be a tough series.

Re: Further OBSERVATIONS ........

Goalie:

Let me know if you go to one of the weekend games, we should meet up one of these times since we're two of the few who post on here.

I was wondering about Duke's starter. Two theories: 1. that he got hurt, or 2. that they put in the second pitcher because he's from South Fayette and they wanted him to pitch in front of friends/family. But in that case, why couldn't they have pitched him in later innings? So, I dunno.

They also had a kid from Pine Richland so I assumed a good deal of the Duke fans were locals.

As far as I know, Jordano has always coached third.

Re: Goalie

Goalie sorry I came across the way I did hope you were not offended. Yes please confirm radar gun readings... I know some of t he pro scouts still use the fast gun JUGS. I use the new Stalker gun the one the pro scouts turned to legit gun readings. My son is hitting 85-88 mph on Stalker and he is a junior in high school hoping to get Coach Jordano to get a little look see at one of his games this season. My son would love to be recruited by Pitt as he is getting D1 interest from the Tri-State area...

UP#1 ..... no offense taken at all ..... thanks for explaining the different types of "guns" .... I'm not sure what type they were using but I was surprised that Pitt's pitchers were all 90+ mph as that was not the case in years gone by on the scouts guns ..... Wotherspoon, in the past, was in the high 80's to 90 so when his readings were 90-91 mph, I didn't think it was out of line but maybe they were using the "fast gun"..... I'll try to see what some different scouts with different guns get in future games if possible and let you know...... Also, good luck to your son !!
