Pitt vs. Gardner-Webb Game Thread

Great start so far with the 16 point lead. Tennessee had some trouble with these guys and we are doing a great job on both ends thus far.

Dunn has looked real good so far in the first 2 and a half games. No turnovers again and good shot selection.

Liked Amsal's move on the block even though the shot didn't fall.

Not a good end to the first half for us, though. Became a bit disjointed once the substitutions started coming.

Even though we had a little bit of lineup juggling going on, I find it a tad disconcerting that we could have such a prolonged scoring drought against a team like Gardner-Webb.

Defense has not been good to start the second half. GW getting easy shots and too many second chances.

Emptying the bench in the first half was such a bonehead coaching move.

That kickstarted their run along with a 2-3 zone switch. And now the lead is 13 as Lowe and our offense is stuck in the mud as Lowe has been off all game long.

Attention Capel. You dont ever empty the bench in the first half. And from a Coach that has lost to garbage teams yearly in the non conference schedule, you should know better than anyone to respect your opponent and make sure the game is over well into the 2nd half before making such a reckless move by putting the entire 2nd string in at once.

Well, the starters haven't done anything in the second half. Other than the lack of energy. I'm sure the guys on the bench to put forth a little more effort

We're out of synch against the zone. One thing I miss about the Jamie teams. We used to carve up zones.

Our interior defense is becoming troubling. If we're having issues with a team like GW getting consistent low block opportunities, we're going to be in big trouble in the ACC. Feels like we need to switch to zone at this point.

Its the defensive rebounding that is the biggest issue. We have given up 11 offensive rebounds and counting.

Defense remains the primary concern with the team so far. Corhen has been in foul trouble every game against lesser opponents and not as physical I was hoping to see. GDG is soft. Often, he has easy RB opportunities that he has trouble corralling. He is still getting beat off the dribble. Teams generally seem to get in the lane too easily against us.

Glad Amsal was back tonight but losing even 2 games matters. Now, he's catching up and not sure how long it will be for him to get where we need him to be. He did so flashes of his talent, though. Seems to have good court vision and ability to make moves with the ball in his hands.

The other thing is we still seem to be mostly a jump shooting team. We have no set plays on the blocks. In a game like this, you'd like to see some effort toward that end but there really wasn't any. Our bigs are there to clean up messes. This is an area I thought we'd be improved; that we'd have a real threat in the post to get an easy bucket at those times when we need it. So far, I'm not seeing that.

Tennessee beat them 80-64. Pitt. 83-64. They are a very well coached team with decent talent.

Thoughts—- we will see lots of zones until we show we can handle them better. AM Edits--Missed too many threes--many because they weren't open enough. Didn't break the zone down to get some inside points, either. If Boeheim were still coaching Cuse and they were last night's opponent we would have been in deep doo-doo. Good news is that Capel knows how to fix this problem--he has done it in the past.

Delalic is still not 100 % back with his shooting skills——at least it appears so --missed shots and even missed FTs. Maybe 1st game jitters but getting shooting rhythm back may take extra time.

Use of deep bench substitutions early made the win a little more difficult to complete. Mainly a problem because it disrupted offensive cohesion and flow. But, this is a necessary evil, IMHO, as there is a need to get those subs who should be future contributors early PT so they can be ready later in the season---Cummings and Delalic especially need this early season PT.

I'm not sure you'll find any team that looks good attacking a zone in November. Not unless you're just busting 3s on the perimeter.
