Pitt vs. ND Game Thread

There was no one in position whatsoever for a put back… inexcusable

the foul shots speak for themselves also inexcusable… not because they didn’t drop but how poorly they were executed… for crissakes I still don’t know what the hell was the intent on the last one but it had nothing to do at all with “shoot ball into hoop for 1point”

Defense was mostly good except for during their second half run. We were switching everything pretty nicely but got caught over helping and leaving shooters open. They didn't miss late at all so that is a credit to them. Sometimes I think it is better to just let the guy drive it and foul him, than leaving shooters open. In the end, it was just a repeat of what we have seen many times before. We let a guy get hot, and he proceeds to kill us.
It’s a perpetual Achilles heel because we are always caught on rotations out of synch in a scramble drill .

I’d happily let gueye and hughley play man straight up against their bigs and take my chances than let a shooter have plenty of time and space for a 3 .

it’s my primary gripe with Capel , just like it was with Dixon .
We’re under gunned on the perimeter this year but I’d prefer more pressure on their guards to force a mistake -
And hopefully a fast break off a turnover .
Points are a premium for this team- but we don’t create points off of turnovers hardly at all.
During the Jacksonville game I swore we may be the worst fast break team I’ve ever seen .

8th graders execute the break better

They took 22 and made 16
So no I won’t agree because 30>6
Notre Dame is gonna make 3's. It is what they do. Plus they shoot free throws well. We will probably not shoot better than than 73 percent all year, so there is that. Notre Dame shot 16-17. That is crazy good even for them. After noting that, you can't miss the front end of a one and one, and then throw up a massive brick with a chance To go up 2 late. Femi converts, we probably win.

Well he made the two to go up 2 with 4:15 left ,
He did miss the front end of a 1 and 1 (we were down 1 at the tone) and he missed his and 1 after his driving layup gave as the lead .
During that same stretch of time notre dame made 3 trays

so even during this isolated 4 minutes
The possible 3 points < 9

And yet the shot that beat us was a strongly contested, 9.8/10 degree of difficulty fall-away 2.

Another way to look at it is, that despite ND's onslaught of made 3s at the end of the game, if your starting guard makes 2 foul shots in the last 3 minutes of your game, you win. He makes one and you tie and at least get OT. Instead, he made none and looked really, really, really bad doing it. I mean it looked like he'd never shot a basketball before.

It's all about making plays that are there to be made when the game is on the line. ND did, Pitt did not. And despite all the 3s and even the improbable game-winning 2, all Pitt had to do to win the game was make 2 out of 3 uncontested free throws in the last 3 minutes.

If you have a starting guard that can't do that, you deserve to lose.
