Pitt vs PSU preseason odds were

Wynn opened at 9.5 a couple hours ago.

This will be up to our D.

App St's offense lost a 4-year-starter superstar QB and 2 great OL from last year, and basically scored at will on PUS's D (AppSt basically threw for 300 and ran for 150). Pickett and a more-nuanced-than-last-week offense should be able to at least match their 33 point effort from Saturday, so either the D can hold PUS under 40-ish points or they can't. PUS just scored 38 in regulation against a Sun Belt team replacing half of their defense, so .... yeah I'll take Pitt and the points.

BTW: PUS had a 100-yard penalty advantage and a +1 turnover advantage while tying the rebuilding Mountaineers.

Our D is better than last season and their O isn't as dynamic. Barring a bunch of turnovers, I don't see them breaking 30 on us. Turnovers long pass plays are the only way they beat us (just like last year).

The result on september 8th will have nothing to do with week one. Didactic reasoning just doesn’t make sense. PSU has talent, and like any favored team can play down to their opponents. We’ve done this countless times with teams like Youngstown State, Maine, UConn, Cincinnatti, Toledo, etc.
Throw out the results from the PSU and our game from week one. It’s going to be more physical and emotional on all levels. I like being a heavy underdog at home, but dont assume we will win because Appalachian State nearly won.
I’m cautiously optimistic, and hoping we have the better team this weekend!
H2P!

Having read in the Post Gazette that McSorley is a high finalist for the Heisman Trophy, that Miles Sanders is better than Barkley, that they are stocked with 4 and 5 star recruits and NFL locks at every position, and that their fans will comprise at least half of the attendance, I can't imagine that they score less then 70 points on us and play their scout team the entire second half. We may also be forced to request that the clock be kept running after halftime. James Franklin, PG's " Dapper Dan Man of the Year" 2018.

Don't read to much into one game. Remember 2 years ago we were coming off a tough game and lit them up in the first half
We came out of that game probably thinking the psu game would be a defensive battle, at least I did. The offense did absolutely nothing spectacular against Villanova. But we won 28-7, that’s a far reach from needing ot to beat app st.

I think it’s hilarious that psu is trying to convince themselves that app state is some great team. They aren’t. Now, psu isn’t as bad as they looked either. It was a first game with inexperienced players for psu. They will be better this week. That said psu isn’t a top 15 team this year. Maybe 20-25, but definitely not too 15. James franklin is a great recruiter and below average coach, and he doesn’t have the experienced talent to be a top15 team this year. The only thing that saves Psu is their schedule is pretty weak.
I really think this game could go either way. I knew we would beat them two years ago, and I knew we would lose last year. This is probably the most evenly matched pitt v psu game out of the three. It’s always nice when we can play a vanilla game to hide what we do too.

I expect Kevin Givens to help a ton. He'll give them a push up front that should help their corners. I'm not sure why so many who watched that App State game and our game think we have this in the bag. If Franklin was half a coach he would have ran Sanders down their throat. He killed App State on that first drive. Bad coaching. Now I dont think he can do that against us. I'm actually hoping he tries. We stopped Barkley who I think is a slightly better back. Not but as much as some would like to think but by some. I think this game looks a lot like their App state game. I think we win because a lack of offensive adjustments at half. They're really going to miss Moorehead this year more than anything.

Pitt NEVER has any game in the bag.

Will be a tough game. We are not explosive, we will be grinding our points. We need to be patient and methodical

PSU held the line around -13/-14 most of the Summer. PSU's -24 against ASU, in retrospect, seemed crazy - yet something around 83% of money wagered still landed on the PSU side prior to that game (per Darren Rovell's tweet last week). Most lines were at -7.5 on Monday with the O/U around 56. Based on week 1 - I don't have a good feel for either team, but I think that the points will be plentiful. I would say take the Over and play the lines in Week 3 after you get another look at both teams.

Agreed. Whichever division Appalachia has itself into this year, Penn State (and all programs at its level) have ridiculously more talent. Saturday was complacency and lack of bothering to prepare, which indeed does happen (Pitt fans know better then most).Yet thanks to overwhelming talent they overcame that in OT with a couple big individual plays, and got a win they didn't deserve.

Problem is, all the reasons they nearly lost last week won't apply this week; they'll be focused and prepared. And although we're closer, they'll still have the edge in talent (on paper) over us as well.

Whether we can muster a good enough game plan, can get unexpectedly good performances from our weak links, if our playmakers can deliver, and we can get some breaks, etc, remains to be seen; we've certainly done this before in recent years. So i don't know that I am optimistic but it's not out of the question. It's why they play the games.
