This could really go either way, Koll's squad is rising and took NCST to the brink last week.
Preview:
125: Babin v Moore
Moore has some solid wins this year over Stickenberger and Ventresca, but is definitely beatable. You may remember he went 2-1 against Macho last season. I think that this one is a real coin flip to start the dual. TOSS UP

133: Chappell? v. Oakley
Assuming that Vin is not yet back for this dual, it looks like we will see Chappell come up against Oakley. Oakley is an APP ST. transfer who went 2-2 at NCAAs last year. He is having a very good season so far and just beat Orine in SV. However, this is a match that I hope we can keep close as Oakley has a dismal 15% bonus rate this season and a 16% rate for his career. If Tyler wrestles hard and smart he can hopefully keep this from getting out of hand. UNC FAVORED

141: Santaniello v. Scott
These two have similar results against common opponents this year. Scott can be tough to score on so I could see this one coming to the top/bottom game of the two. This is another match like 125 that can go either way in this dual. TOSS UP

149: Solomon/Brown v. McNeil
Lachlan McNeil is a 2xAA at 141 who moved up to 149 this season. He is wrestling great with his only losses coming to the returning 4th, 5th, and 6th placed finishers from last year, who are/were all ranked top 3-5 in the nation. He is the favorite no matter who goes, but with the remaining matches this season and the fact Kade has one date left leads me to think he goes in either this one or Sunday against ISU, considering VT has Henson and UVA is a match better served for the postseason starter. UNC FAVORED

157: Evans v. Santiago
These two have very similar results so far this season, based on what they have done this year I think this a match that easily could go either way. Santiago was an NCAA qualifier last year who was 2-0 against Keslar. TOSS UP

First Half: 0 Pitt Favored, 3 Toss up, 2 UNC Favored

165: Keslar v. Darracott?
Fea has been the starter at 165 all year for UNC but Darracott got the start against NCST and Fea was up at 174 for an open tournament 2 weeks ago. Darracott is a talented guy, but he has wrestled five matches since 2023. I really don't know what to make of him, he had a much better performance against Fields of NCST than Keslar did but he still ended up losing. No choice but to call it a TOSS UP

174: Augustine v. Ogunsanya
Both of these guys are known to wrestle close, low-scoring matches. Ogunsanya looks solid up at 174 this year but Augustine has a real shot at taking him out in this one. Another match that's so close it is hard to preview, will probably come down to 1 or 2 sequences. TOSS UP

184: Heller v. Kane
These two vets have had similar careers at this weight class, and are 1-1 against each other all time. Heller is definitely having the better season of the two and he will look to continue that momentum. However, if Kane is on, I expect him to give Heller all he can handle. TOSS UP

197: Stout v. Lautt
While Lautt has had some solid performances this year starting at 197 for the Heels, I expect Mac to win this and win this controlled, based on Lautt's results this year and in past year at 197. Mac has not lost since late November and I think he continues that streak in this one. PITT FAVORED

285: Pitzer v. Guttridge/Neves
Both of these heavyweights for UNC are solid, but neither are on Pitzer's level and I would expect him to put up bonus against either of them. PITT FAVORED

2nd Half: 2 Pitt Favored, 3 Toss Up, 0 UNC Favored

Overall: 2 Pitt Favored, 6 Toss Up, 2 UNC Favored
This match has two mirrored halves, either team could take it with an upset or just controlling the majority of the toss ups. This team beat VT and nearly beat NCST. A win here would not only be a real statement but would keep us in contention for the ACC crown.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share these insights!

I am pretty sure Tebo (Chappell) is going this weekend. Vin is close to being back from what I understand.

You know your lightweights are weak when you're happy to be down 9-0 after 3 matches

Pitt just needs to finish as the early bouts went as expected and close, middle critical went Pitt close and the last 3 should go Pitt but Heller is key

What a dual so far! Panthers are really gutting out these wins in the last seconds!

Pitzer has done this before, blown a team win getting beat by a nobody, forget if A State or some ACC match last year where he just looked terrible

stupid

but wrestling is not a team sport and while the first 9 kids looked like they wanted the team win, Pitzer wrestled like he didn't really care

I just honestly don’t get him. It looks like he’s so slow. Definitely not strong enough like I was so excited to see him possibly be a 2-3 time all American. I don’t even think he’ll be a one time unless something changes over the next two years with his offseason training.

Disappointing loss. Thought the big guys were going to bail out the first 4 lightweights. No offense and no sense of urgency. That had been better in most matches this year. They have had a solid year and this young team is getting better. Unfortunately let this one get away. Iowa St has to be a good rebound.

He wrestled like he cared, but not necessarily with a plan to win. After the first two outside singles failed miserably, maybe dont go back to it again.

Even Pitzer's top game has taken a huge step back.

I keep coming back to him struggling to carry the added weight. He is still a small heavy weight but is slow and sluggish like a big hwt.

The added weight is definitely not helping. He is very talented but has not looked anywhere as good he did as a true frosh. Injury/other things could be part of it and if he puts it together for postseason its all good

I agree but Im just not sure I see it at this point. He has no variation to his attacks, isnt using snaps and motion to set up his shots, his posture on his shots is AWFUL, and he is happy to stop and let guys put their weight on him when he does shoot and get to a leg.

The one thing he has going for him is that he is young, but that ain't much.

I cant say that I expected Mac and Pitzer to be in polar opposite spots heading into post season.

This is uncalled for. Everyone on the team wrestled their butts off up until Pitzer.

It was a great performance undone by one stinker
I dont know about everyone, but that is my point with this Gavin led program how many times has it been “one stinker” that screws it up for the team. If “everyone” wrestled their butts off guess Pitt would have won on points not UNC.

It’s embarrassing sorry that’s my opinion they shouldn’t have lost whether it was one guys fault or everyone’s they shouldn’t have lost tonight to UNC. The heavyweight hadn’t won an ACC match all year.

You certainly have a right to complain, and your complaints are valid to an extent, but embarrassing it is not. It was an exciting duel with two closely matched teams. Pitt lost in the end and that sucked, but its gonna be ok.

We all want Pitt to be better but this team is still very young and is clearly improving (Solomon, Evans, Heller, Luca, and Stout all are much better than last year).

The starting lineup has 2 seniors, 2 juniors, 4 sophs, and 2 frosh, with a stud freshman in Kade Brown taking a redshirt.

This is technically a rebuild/reset year, and Pitt is still competitive. We may not see an AA this year, but the ability is there.

The arrow is pointing up, not down

I should’ve been more specific… Pitzer was embarrassing… the loss overall felt typical to what has been under Gavin and just plain sucked.

Yes there is a future there with who we have but it feels somewhat hopeless under his leadership but we shall see.

What exactly are we rebuilding from?

Last year, when we were 4th in the ACC? It seems to me that if you are going to call this a rebuilding year, we should be rebuilding from a year or two when we were a better program. When was that year? This year it looks like we could be 5th in the ACC with Stanford joining. Going from 4th to 5th is not rebuilding. It’s stagnating.

We saw Pitzer two years ago as a true frosh and he looked like someone who would be really good. He hasn’t improved and appears to be regressing. Both of the Jersey boys have IMO been disappointments. Stout is really good. Augustine always gives a great effort but the tools are limited. Heller is in his final year so he is not part of any rebuild. Neither is Babin. Last year, the excuse for Solomon was that he was young. Now it’s still the excuse. He is average and is not likely to improve very much IMO. Especially when considering Gavin’s track record of having wrestlers like Mickey and Cole regress under his coaching.

Pitzer is struggling with the weight gain, between the injuries i am not sure he can get to the strength he will need at heavyweight. Truthfully he was better his first season because he was quicker and had moves most heavies don't have. Not sure but maybe he needs to lean out a bit and really work on the core strength. My guess is mentally he is probably down but he is still young.

Oh look, you're complaining again. Your schtick is tiresome.

We are rebuilding from the perspective that we no longer have a clear top 10 guy in the lineup now. But the lineup is deeper, and the team is competitive despite not having those anchor guys to carry the team.

Half of the lineup is markedly improved over last season. 60% of the lineup is underclassmen.

But the sky is always falling with you. Im not sure that you're even capable of seeing a bright side of anything

You’re just mad I know the sport better than you lol
😂🤣😂🤣😂

You've NEVER brought anything positive or constructive to the conversation here.

You came to this board trying to fight people.

If Im mad about anything, its that you exist here. I have no doubt that you bring the people in your life great misery.
