Why are they working out on June 8th when football won't be played until the second semester, per SMF???

All of the schools who are bringing players back are doing it as "voluntary"."voluntary"
It will be interesting to see what happens to roster spots on some of the perennial top 10 teams if top players didn't return early.

They will be as voluntary as summer workouts for football (and basketball) always are.
There's no such thing as a voluntary workout in college. If you don't "voluntarily" show up, you might as well not bother showing up when it's mandatory.
Nonsense, if they don't show up they still have their scholarship when the mandatory drills start in August. The coaches may not like it but voluntary means just that voluntary.
Playing time is finite. Competition for that playing time is almost limitless (unless you play TE at Pitt). So yes. voluntary. But not really.
You know how you hear about "a kid just hasn't bought in" or "his heart isn't in it"? Missing voluntary workouts can get you that label.
