Pitt Women Finally Win an ACC Game

Slowed pace and only had 12 turnovers. Beat Wake Forest.
Do you think part of their problem is that far too many players still feel they should be and want to be big scorers on the team?

Roles have never been anywhere near clearly defined.

Pitt’s best two offensive players, Everett and Harris, go a combined 6 for 33 and Pitt wins…. Crazy.

I hope Strother and Everett keep shooting a high volume of threes, but the team just really struggles to score. At one point in the second quarter they were 1 for 11.

Go Pitt.

My sense is there are no
egos in play here. I think
they know the consistent
scorers are Harris and
Everett. They seem like
genuinely good people and
team mates. ....Great hustle,
and work ethic.

As far as "roles never been
anywhere defined," I think
you make a good point there.
That happens when you have
a 12, and 13 mix and match
rotation that White uses. As
I noticed today there seemed
less of that. Igbokwe, Harris,,
and Everett have very clear
roles as they should. The big
subs also do (Mary Dunne
IMO shouldn't see the floor
except for mop up duty. I
posted that last week. After
watching today, White must be
paying attention. LOL I hope
he finally setttle on a rotation.
By this time those "roles" are
obvious to anyone watching
this team.

Hilarious! You're right. Let's
not be fooled though, WF is
not very good. They played
a TO loaded game 21. We had
12, which is a big improvement.
Regardless it was a sloppy
game. I thought we had more
talent, and we dominated
inside, despite their edge in
rebounds. Their bigs were bad.
Anyone paying attention can
easily see the difference
between these two teams and
the first four ACC teams we've
played.

We were 29% from the field,
but doubled their made threes,
and hit more FT's. That was the
difference. We were just a little
less sloppy.

No Hayford today — undoubtedly helped with the turnover total.

Only thing I question about today’s minutes is why isn’t Liatu King playing more. This team struggles so much to score - I think she would help with more minutes. I know AB is a team leader, but I’d play AB somewhat less and Tu somewhat more…

Go Pitt.

I gotta believe she's either
inured or sick. You're right
about less TO's without her,
but we were still sloppy.

I also agree about King.

Gary, if you watch them on
offense, they are all looking
to Everett and Harris to
take the shot. They're also
defintely looking for Strother
on 3's. and Ibokwe inside.
The problem is they struggle
offensively and end up with a
lot of rushed one on ones. I
don't see it as too many wanting
to shoot. I also think they're
coached to get those players
the ball and do the shooting.

Only watched 2nd half (ACCNX) but they looked a lot less sloppy than what I have seen in previous games.

They handled the full court press much better also. Agree though that Wake is not a good team.

Other than the 4 players you list, are there other players when than get playing time taking 5 or more shots?

Slowed pace

If you watched the game it was most certainly not slow paced. It was a 73 possession game, which is certainly not slow. I can't imagine Pitt has played too many games with more than 73 possessions.

I mean Pitt scored 65 points in a game that they shot 29% from the field. You can't do that without the game being played at a relatively high pace.

That's the weird thing about the fewer than normal turnovers. Wake pressed almost all game. And Wake's press wasn't one that was just designed to make us waste time getting the ball into the offensive end of the court. They were trapping out of the press every chance they could. That's the kind of defense that normally causes this team to turn the ball over at an alarming rate. And yet today they had far fewer than their normal number of turnovers.

Perhaps that impression of a slow pace came from not seeing ”heater-shelter” wildly out of control play today—at least during the 2nd half. As mentioned I didn’t watch the 1st half.

I also was surprised that
the TO number was 12. I
know what you're saying
about the press normally
poducing more. I didn't see
as many of the self induced
TO's as we did against BC.
I'm not going to think we've
suddenly fixed this problem.
I see it more as a poor WF
team, and we were more
effecrive against that lesser
team.

Part of that pace was not
having Hayford on the floor.
Even though White subbed,
he had the better players
getting the maor minutes.
He also had Dunn with only
three minutes. He needs to
employ a more set, and
limited # rotation.

As far as the "helter skelter
wildly out of control play,"
maybe White is paying
attention to what's being
repeated here over and
over. If only....LOL

Yes, when they're on the
floor I can see King, and
Brown getting shots, Ezeja
with putbacks and open
layups only. Johnson and
Exanor are getting better
and I think will be effective
shooters in time.

The 7/2 assist to turnover ratio certainly help
That's a great ratio for
our pg, especially on this
team. A startling ratio
was WF's 8/21 ratio. That
is as bad as it gets, and
speaks to what kind of
team WF is. THAT is what
loses games for a team.
Point in case, Spear who is
their best player and had
20 pts. had an assist to
TO ratio of 0/6 today.

I think it's pretty clear that if Igbokwe didn't pick up her second foul so early in the first half that Dunn wouldn't have played either. But they had a lot of minutes to cover at the center position without Igbokwe in the first half, too many for you to get all those minutes from one player.
