Pitt Women

And in case you missed it, Pitt and assistant Coach Josh Petersen parted ways. Josh, who coached our post players, was then hired by Miami. Josh was replaced by Nick DiPillo.

Nick recently had great success as a head coach in Division III at Scranton; assisted for 5 years at Seton Hall, and coached a few years in the WNBA (where he coached post players).

After Rita Igbokwe transferred out and said she didn’t feel like she had progressed - the writing seemed to be on the wall…. Hoping new coach Nick can improve the offense around the basket…. And hoping sort of new coach Brianna Keisel can help the guards…

Go Pitt.

That is a laudable goal but will likely be hindered by the 2022-23 roster's lack of post players ---no one on roster over 6-2 and both of those players are forwards, not posts. At this point, even defensive rebounding should be of major concern and interior offense may prove to be almost non-existent, IMHO.

Maybe improved offense around the basket (compared to last season) will happen in 2023-24 if a post player or two are added to the roster by then.

Let's hope I am proven wrong.

Agree with you. Rita leaving has really hurt this team, IMHO. Perhaps if Coach White had made a move sooner….

Maybe now he’ll be more demanding on the players on things like earning playing time.

Go Pitt.

Well, it's hard to say that
Rita's lack of progress was
only due to poor coaching
by the assistant. The real
problem IMO was the
other ACC teams for the
most part had legitimate
bigs. Rita was a level down
from them. Also it was
pretty clear that she was
a slow, plodding type of
player. It seemed as if she
had hands of stone. She
also didn't do well in the
race horse pace that we
often played.

She could block shots, and
if she got position, she
rebounded pretty well. The
problem is...who are now
our bigs?

This team certainly has
guards. I haven't seen the
new ones, but some are
probably the most talented
players on the team. It'll
be interesting to see how
Coach White blends them
in. Harris, Clesca, Hayford,
Exaner, and Strother are all
back. They're experienced,
and I hope they really
improve. Strother is the only
real outside threat (and
she's not all that reliable).
There are shooters in the
new group., and at least
one of them will have to
step up.

Better to have a 6' tall person who can play rather than a 6'4" person who can't.

Well we have that in
Amber Brown. For a
player who is 6'0'' she
is ok inside. I feel our
best inside player is
Liatu King who is also
listed as 6'0." She is
better on the high
post as she can hit
from there.

Even with these two
we lack an inside
threat on both O and
D. Maybe Ezeja and
transfer, Hutchinson
will help. However in
ACC play IMO, we'll be
overmatched inside.

We were completely overmatched in the post last year.

That's kind of the point. If we have one of the worst batch of centers in the league that will be just about exactly the same as last year. Instead of worrying about positions, worry about whether or not people can play.

Yeah, I agree, we were
"overmatched" last year
inside, and appear to
be this year as well.
Playing our best players
as opposed to position
makes sense with this
year's group. I don't
know what other choice
White has. How much
can Ezeja be expected
to improve? Hutchinson?

A problem I see this season is too many guards. You’d think having a bunch of experienced guards coming back would be good news, but it’s not.

Coach White has shown he likes to play everybody. That’s just not going to work. The problem is complicated because it appears the best shooters are the true freshmen. This will be a big challenge for Coach White. While I like him, he strikes me as a bit too much of a Mr. Nice Guy, keep-everybody-happy coach…

Go Pitt.

Even a 6-4 player who is average or mediocre is a big asset, IMHO. Rita did improve some as she got more experience.

Rita absolutely was a “presence”in the paint on the defensive end.

I agree with all that. But Igbokwe wasn't an average or mediocre ACC center. She was one of the worst starting centers in the ACC (I'd have to think about it, but it is possible she was THE worst). The difference between her and the best centers in the ACC was enormous.
