I'd love to see a throwback or modernized version of these for next year.

The SEC was having race problems back then... and today!

Just a thought...is there anything really wrong with our current uni's? I mean, we got the Script back which is awesome. I personally think the mustard/royal combo is dreadful. I was there for the end of the 'banana yellow/royal blue' deal and then Back to the Future with Majors 2. That was awful, IMO. I kinda what we have now. Have Nike jazz it up a LITTLE bit and let it ride. I don't want to be Oregon/Maryland clones...

Change from Vegas to Old gold and they will be perfect.

I was a senior at New Brighton High School the year of that magazine. I bought the Street and Smiths magazine every year while it was published. Those Pitt uniforms were actually very nice. The only game I saw in person that year was against Washington, a 13-6 Pitt win. Paul Martha was a good friend of a teacher in our school. I got to meet him when he came to the school to visit her. Being a big Pitt fan, meeting him made my day.

looks like wvu's modern colors lol

but slap a pitt script on the side of the helmet and it would look good

Old gold rules

Would like a throwback to that team on the field performance even better

It beat ND , three teams from the West Coast and a one point thriller over State College

Definitely

But S&S Trademark , unless misremembering , was phptographing the cover player without the face mask

Love those old S&S

That uniform in the S&S picture of Paul Martha was not Pitt's uniform in 1963. The '63 jersey had two stripes on each shoulder, and I think the helmet had numbers on each side. The shoulder stripes were new that season. It was a really cool uniform.

I think what is cool, is next year, we are gonna have multiple unis, appeasing all of us.. Black unis, a variation of the old 70/80's style, and probably a new look as well. Right now, we are mixing and matching the same unis to have a new look.. I am pumped to see it..

Yep remember the numerals. But don't remember the jersey stripes actually.
Have an uncle who took me a little kid to first Pitt game when they played State. Beautiful sunny day ......but
The Kennedy Assasination, the games sb or should not be played.
The sadness over the Army Navy game.

And all the while a terrific Pitt team goes "uninvited"
Powerful memories in a couple weeks

Why did they not get invited to a bowl? I know the psu game was played later because of the Kennedy Assasination, but how did other teams get invited? Could they not have cancelled the psu game? I wasn't born at that time, so I don't know. It just seems odd that Pitt didn't get an invite, but others did.

By moving back the PSU game, Pitt was left out after all the bowl slots were taken. In those days there were just a handful of bowl games and they were prized.

Best uniforms ever
The 70-72s were the ones worn for the 36-35 comeback stunner vs WVU, and for the first Pitt Stadium turf game -- a color vs color matchup with UCLA. However bad those Pitt teams were, they looked sharp. Northwestern stripes on the sleeves.

When Majors arrive he brought the Iowa State uni template with him -- same jersey striping pattern, aslo used by Flutie-era Boston College -- and the metallic old gold turned to butterscotch and the blue brightened a few shades.

@ncyajleel

I was not around then either but essentially the story was told to me thusly:

Pitt had a great season (which was very unexpected) starting out by beating UCLA and it's only loss was to Heisman winner Staubaugh and Navy.

Back then, there were very few bowls around they normally extended invites earlier than they do now. The assassination of our President threw a wrench into Pitts post-season plans because (I think) bowls wanted to see the outcome of the Pitt-State Penn game before deciding. I think it was primarily the Orange Bowl. Pitt also wasn't interested in any of the lower tier games...

Michelson led the Panthers to a 9-1 mark and beat the Nitts by one point.

Texas won the title that year and dominated Navy in the Cotton Bowl. If Army would have beat Navy in their late December classic, Pitt would have likely played Texas in the Cotton Bowl instead.

As it stood, Pitt finished the year ranked 4th and spent New Years at home.

Yes and State was good that year and the bowls didn't want to take a chance Pitt loses and then they have a team from The East with 2 losses. It was that hard for eastern teams to make bowls.

If I recall correctly, Pitt had an offer from the Gator Bowl, but turned it down with the expectation that a New Year's Bowl offer would be forthcoming. The delay in playing the Penn State game due to the Kennedy assassination, which was two weeks, caused those bowls to look elsewhere and Pitt was left empty handed. Frank Carver was the AD then and many have found fault with the way he handled the situation.

The story I was told ---Johnny in 73 wanted a gold to match the patina of the Western Pennsylvania Mountain Lion/Panther
Thus.....Mustard was born
