Pitt's defense ranked 33rd nationally in total defense last year?!

So I looked at Pitt's athletic website and noticed the "Pitt Football Positional Preview: The Defense" article, and I can't get past the first sentence in the article. "The Pitt defense will feature seven returning starters from last year’s team that ranked 33rd nationally in total defense." Is this real life? Did the Delaware game jump their ranking 60 spots? I'm so confused about what I watched last year.
