Sorry for the alliteration, I couldn't help myself. Try to say that five times fast though.
I know we’ve talked about the 2017 offensive line recruiting class in recent days, with the Panthers’ new focus there, but they’re still doing work in the 2018 group as well. The fact that Pitt’s offensive line coach John Peterson is also the lead area recruiter for the Panthers in central Ohio has lent itself pretty well to some early evaluations.
Pickerington (Ohio) North offensive tackle/defensive end Alex Williams is one of just four offensive line prospects in the state of Ohio’s 2018 class who already holds a scholarship offer from a Division I programs. The 6-foot-6, 215-pound standout made an early commitment to Iowa State, but has continued to take visits in recruiting a look around a little bit, and Pitt is intrigued by his length and athleticism.
The Panthers have maintained contact with Williams in the early goings of his recruitment and he’s developed a bit of a rapport with Peterson as they build a relationship. Pitt hasn’t offered Williams yet, but he likes Peterson as a coach and still hears from them frequently.
“I talk here and there with coach Peterson, he's a great coach. They haven't told me what position they see me as though, probably defensive end or offensive tackle,” Williams said.
Williams had planned to follow up on his conversations with Pitt with a visit to campus to learn more about the Panthers’ program and see Pitt play Marshall on Saturday night, but his plans were not destined to come to fruition. Blame the Liberty Bridge or what have you, but the visit didn’t occur.
“I didn’t get to make it due to traffic. We were trying to get into town, but the traffic was really bad and we had to turn back around with how late it was by time we would have gotten there. I reached out to coach Peterson to apologize for missing the visit,” Williams said.
Williams said he would have missed the kickoff and likely the vast majority of the first half and opted to return home. Still, despite that, he told me that he plans to continue to speak with Pitt and coach Peterson as things move forward and they see his tape. He’s a thin kid now, but he’s a name to keep in mind moving forward as that frame fills out and Pitt sees more of him. Williams pretty much solely plays defensive end right now, but most schools see him as an offensive tackle. Here's his film so far:
