Most of the Pittsburgh sports media could use a good, solid slap in the face!
Alan couldn’t write his article without Jamarious Burton citing the exact reasons we all know why Pitt lost. He wanted to ask stupid questions.
But yes they should answer questions.
For the most part they do. Calling it a slap in the face is a really childish take by Alan.
I agree that generally speaking they should answer questions.
But this reminds me of a time literally decades ago when John Stiegerwald was doing sports on channel two and he completely went off on a rant one night because someone on one of the local teams, I think it was the Pirates but I could be wrong, didn't come out and answer questions after a game. He was just going nuts. And he tried to sell it all that this player not talking to the media didn't bother him and wasn't anything against him, it was an affront to the fans because the fans need to know what the players have to say after a game.
And I remember sitting there laughing at the ridiculousness of it all. Yeah, he was so wound up because of the poor fans. And it occurred to me, how often does anyone say anything really inciteful in post game interviews like that? Like tonight, what was Blake Hinson going to say that was going to make us all say, oh, now I understand why we rebounded like crap. Or oh, now I understand why Miami shot threes pretty well. Or really anything like that at all.

He is, or at least was, I really don't know what he's doing these days, one of those people who got a job reporting on sports who seem to really dislike sports.
Which never made any sense to me, but then again I actually like sports.

Frankly I often wonder why Pitt associates with the local media at all. Sports or academics. It’s definitely hostile. Pitt is a convenient bogeyman and there is little to gain giving access to these jackals.
A decade or so ago, I used to talk with Greg Hotchkiss on a very regular basis and he often told me how much more friendly and pro Pitt national reporters were than local reporters.
Now John Stiegerwald is a right wing conspiracy theorist who tweets extremely offensive stuff about women and trans people and lots of other right wing garbage. I used to watch him growing up in the 80's and early 90's all the time on KDKA TV. Even called him at work to talk sports. I liked him as a sportscaster. Unfortunately he went off the deep end.
Remember Thor Tolo? Wonder whatever happened to him. Remember George Von Benko? He had a 2 hour talk show from 9-11pm on 1250 WTAE radio in the 80's and we used to prank call him all the time. For whatever reason lots of people would bring up Harold Carmichael to him and he would cut the caller off and hang up. He would get so angry and annoyed by the constant Harold Carmichael calls. It was so frequent he finally had Carmichael on as a guest lol.
Ah the good ol' days.
Interviews are the worst part of sports. It's one empty cliche after another. And if you veer ever so slightly from the bag of hollow answers, the media will blow it up in your face, even if they have to take it out of context to juicen it up.
Professional athletes are obligated to meet with the press. Student athletes are not obligated to meet with the press.
Madden was at it too last night. Problem around the Pittsburgh region is these pricks will never recognize Pitt as the hometown team. They cater to the st penn and wv crowds. Alot of their grads have infiltrated into the media and spew their BS. Having slob Huggins on The Fan, the Pitt flagship station is a slap in the face.

I've already said that I think that athletes should answer questions after games, but I also think that players should be allowed to say no, I don't want to talk right now. And when they do, people should respect that.
Indeed. All of this. In sports, Pitt is the only program that the local media are allowed to be critical of … anyone doing so of the Steelers (who have not totally sucked, but basically are a nothing burger for going on a decade) are blacklisted. Similar to the Penguins, at least up to the new ownership that seems to have ostracized Mario… before that, being too harsh about the Pens was also career threatening. The Pirates deserve totally nothing but vitriolic scorn, but this is the oldest, fattest region in America and they like their Buccos and Manny Sanguillen pork wraps and sky blasts, so they have to be given undue positive attention. Infamously the Penn State rapes did, and still do, get totally censored here. Truly the only coverage of their continued atrocities are when national media report on them. Here they are completely put on a pedestal. Greatest university on earth, greatest football, greatest bogus dance marathon, Franco, Ham, Friarmuth, Franklin and his phony helicopter drop ins… here are the golden keys to the city. Rape and pillage as you will, those 5 years old boys loved it, that teenage girl last summer loved getting her body torn apart by the multiple PSU football gods who worked her over.
Plus the media are still generally made up of old bitter D-bags like Smizik and Cook and Jerry Micco and the like. Ostensibly retired but still lurk like hepatitis. Maybe when they finally die they’ll take the Paterno/Sandusky worship to hell with them. But meanwhile Micco orchestrated the hiring of umpteen more Nits to infiltrate the roster. They all suck so they’ll never be promoted out of town, so Nit and Steelers worship will continue for the next 30 years.
And that is just sports. As far as the university itself, it is definitely public enemy number one with the awful, corrupt, bloated city government. All of the waste, embezzlement and horrible planning and operations get blamed on Pitt “Not paying it’s fair share”. The media that is 100% in line with the government politically (and dependent on the good will to get access) obediently do they bidding. Seriously, Bill Peduto was breathtakingly awful as a mayor, yet his predecessor might be worse, and with crime rampant and infrastructure disintegrating and police demonized, there is not a single word of criticism. Just pounding on Evil Empire Pitt, not “paying it’s fair share”. The city is hostile and obstructs every Pitt initiative, and the local media go right along with it. So why would Pitt cooperate with this in any manner? There’s no winning.
To be fair poni and mueller were hyper critical of Ben and the Steelers. They also got kind of blackballed by them because of it
He works for PGHSportsNow and they pay thousands of dollars to travel to these games and cover them so it’s a slap in the face that he didn’t get a player quote

Saunders constantly wets his diaper over stuff like this. He was crying about the city game not being played. He threw a fit every year when Narduzzi locked media out of Penn State week. I don't know- maybe there are people who eat this stuff up. I've always assumed most people just watch the games and tune out after. I follow free agency, draft etc. and offseason stuff but I can't remember the last time I read an article or watched a post game presser.
There is a still a story for him to write about the game without having Hinson or Burton come out and say "we didn't rebound well enough, we need to be better." So it's not like his trip to south Florida was worthless.
Not to mention Alan has been pretty loud in proclaiming NET is a great metric and I guarantee he’d ask some idiotic question about these losses vindicating numbers that say we suck
