Playing DB in pass defense in today's CFB is an extremely tough task

Because of all the Pitt away games and only 2 Sat. home games so far for Pitt, I've had a chance to watch a lot more CFB around the country on TV than in some recent prior years. Wow! There are sure a LOT of defensive PI calls being made.

Maybe since the penalty is only 15 yards in college regardless of the length of the throw, officials tend to be more flag happy? But you see receivers pushing off and they are allowed to do that more often than not. But if a DB comes even close, they get flagged. Seems to get even worse late in close games.

Realize that the trend is that offense and scoring are what the "powers that be" seem to believe that fans and TV viewers want more of. But from seeing some of these calls, maybe they've gone over the top? Think there were 3 def. PI calls against Miami last night on Duke's final scoring drive. To me, looked like maybe 1 was legit. Similar stuff in other games, all across the country. Not just the ACC. Although the ACC is definitely one of the worst culprits.

But man, I would not want to be a DB coach in CFB these days. Tough job. Hard on the players, especially the DB's, too. Guess it's not going to change. But this isn't the same interpretation or type of officiating of pass defense play that I can recall watching the game since I was a kid. It has fundamentally changed the game, IMO.
