Sorry, I just hate ND too much! It would be like asking me if I would rather beat PoSU/wvu or win the ACC coastal.

UNC. Simple fact of staying in contention to win the Coastal. I love when PITT beats ND, especially from an exposure standpoint, but a chance to play in the ACC Championship game is more important.

Additionally, it's all about the timing of the games as well. Lose to UNC this week and PITT will drop from the Top 25, giving way to UNC to make their way in the polls. A big win this week against UNC in a nationally televised game would almost assure PITT would remain in the polls even with a close loss to ND the following week.

As most noted, in the past, just going for the grasping at straws thing, ND.

Now, if the goal is REALLY to win something, NC ...

I gave this some thought SMF and I think the answer is clear.

UNC. Why?
Well the obvious is we stay on top of the ACC Coastal.
But on top of this, we have a bye week next week. This will be 2 weeks of likely moving up the rankings, two more weeks of hype leading up to the ND game. Primetime coverage. Gameday maybe. And by the time we play, Pitt might be somewhere around 16 in the rankings.

Lose to ND, maybe slide back to 22, be at 7-2 and still have the inside track to the ACC Coastal and 10 win season.

Tough question. common sense should dictate saying UNC but damn would beating ND be nice.. Still going with UNC, think the momentum of going 7-1 into ND with a close loss would be better than losing some steam with a UNC loss..

But I picked UNC. Because my personal goal for this team is just get in that ACC title game, it would be so much fun to see them be in a "CHAMPIONSHIP game".

IF this is an either/or scenario, the clear choice are wins against ACC opponents. But, I agree with Pitt79...both are certainly doable. Of course, it's also doable to not either both too.

Our team needs to be ready...they will be.

True. The winner Thursday gets the top 25 ranking, the other is kicked out. A win Saturday would definitely buy some insurance for a possible loss against ND.

I'm a Pittsburgh fan and I'm old. I have seen Pitt win a national title, the Steelers win 6 Super Bowls, the Penguins win 3 Stanley Cups, and the Pirates win 2 World Series. So in my lifetime it averages out to be a title every 4.5 years of my life. I would LOVE to see Pitt win and be a contender again. But I have been spoiled in my lifetime by these Pittsburgh sports teams so at this point in my life I just want to see them beat Notre Dame, Penn State, and WVU every time they play.

WOW. It's been 6 years since a Pittsburgh team has won a title. I'M DUE FOR ANOTHER ONE!!!

I'd rather beat PSU than win the Coastal. I'd rather win the Coastal than beat WVU.

Should we assume a win over Duke for your question?

For me, Notre Dame, because that is the game I'm able to go to.

But yeah, the correct answer is North Carolina, for reasons stated above.

Just thought of something. Pitt/ND can affect Pitt winning the Coastal due to tiebreakers. If Pitt, Duke, and UNC all finish 7-1. Pitt beats UNC. UNC beats Duke. Duke beats Pitt, the Coastal champ is determined by CFP rank and I'd guess that Pitt would be highest ranked in that scenario with an ND win.

If you pick losing to UNC, you just dont get it...
If Pitt only lost 4 games in the next four seasons, I wouldn't care if it was to UPS every year. And I hate them horribly. The ACC games are just so much more important...Sorry.

Pitt has one loss already. The OP is asking who we would rather lose to, which means we will have at least two losses and we are not going to the playoffs with two losses. In fact, if Clemson doesn't run the table, the ACC will be the conference left out in the cold this year. If we are playing for recruits, Notre Dame is more of a recruiting rival to us than UNC or Duke and I imagine a lot of recruits will be there against ND as I'm sure there will be against UNC. Beating ND will help us just as much as going to the ACC title game. In fact, more people will probably be watching us against ND than the ACC championship. The best scenario this year is to run the table, if we can't then I don't think it will really matter who we lose to.

These kinds of poll questions are always fun, because there is no obvious answer.

My first instinct is to say that beating UNC is more important for Pitt, but then I think about the importance nationally of a W over a ranked ND team - one that a host of talking heads think could be the 1 loss team to make the playoffs (to finish with 1 loss, ND would have to beat Stanford).

For Pitt going into to a bowl and for recruiting, this class and the next, for national exposure to help set up next year, which is better: winning the Coastal after losing to ND, or finishing 2nd in the Coastal after beating ND?

I may lean to the latter.

I agree with you. Winning the Coastal would be great, and I would love to. But right now our top priority is to win recruits and I honestly don't know which one would be better, UNC or ND. I would lean towards ND too because we compete in recruiting with them. I have been to the last three ND/Pitt games here and there were far more eyes on those games than UNC/Pitt, no offense intended.

If there is such a thing as winning too early, this may be the case if we win the Coastal because we have a far tougher schedule next year. We play Clemson away and our OOC schedule includes PoSU and Oklahoma State. Even though those three games have nothing to do with a Coastal Division title, they are going to make it even more tough to win it.

Of course playing those teams, win or lose, will only make Pitt better. Going to be a tough season and I hope we do really well.

If it is an "or" situation (win one lose one) got to be Notre Dame...who the hell cares about the "Costal" since the loss to Notre Dame would take Pitt out of the National Championship race...the only importance the "Costal" championship imparts is a milepost on the way to the playoff..otherwise, so what?
