While Lyke acknowledges that a mad scramble for instant success isn't the way to run a program year-to-year, she doesn't deny the prevalence of the Transfer Portal in college basketball and how Pitt has to be better at recruiting through it.

"You can't just open it up and look at who's there, you have to do your homework on all those people. We've prioritized that research because of the opportunity to find good kids who didn't fit wherever they were. There are very talented student athletes out there and a full vetting of that is a priority for our coaching staff right now because it can help a team quickly."

Lyke acknowledged that part of Pitt's plan for better utilizing the Transfer Portal moving forward has been to assign two staff members dedicated to study players within the portal.
Lyke felt Capel mishandled last years portal recruiting.

The only reason we “currently” have 2 staff members dedicated to portal recruiting, is because Lyke “suggested” it or mandated it.

Who are the 2 staff members dedicated to Portal recruiting? What are their names?

Gary and Vader/SteelCurtain.
 Who knew?

Seriously though, are these 2 new additional positions that have been created? Or were current staff members assigned additional responsibilities and duties?

Cieplicki from Vermont and Jake Presutti who was at Marquette.

I believe current staff members. Probably one full time assistant and one admin type (Cieplicki or Presutti)

Well they have an extremely important and critical job. Because team chemistry and getting guys to play together has been a big problem here for awhile now.

So doing the preliminary vetting of guys to meet HL’s directive and criteria carries a lot of significance and responsibility.

As has been said on here frequently, Pitt needs not only really good basketball players with the talent to win in the ACC, but also guys who are really good TEAMMATES who want to win as a team over and above any individual praise or accolades.

I think Brown has been involved a bunch, too. I think he’s the guy who made initial contact with Alston.
I think the actual bench staff is still doing the recruiting/closing. They should be. It’s a BIG part of all of their jobs.

But the other 2 are evidently responsible for doing a lot of the background and behind the scenes vetting. Probably investigating contacts and sources who are familiar with the recruits’ attitudes and if they are likely to be able to “play well with others” on their team.

One of the biggest hurdles Pitt has to overcome right now , IMO, is to put together a roster where the team on the floor is better than the sum of the parts. Capel then has to be the leader to get the team on the floor to play that way. Instead of a bunch of individuals.

I meant Gilbert Brown, not Milan. But I agree with the rest.
