Position Battles (Offense)

Pitt has an ok group of offensive players returning. In order of job security, Morrisey is a stud. Pickett, Hargrove, Mack, Kradel, Jacques-Louis are in the next group of average to good ACC players. Wayne and Vincent Davis showed some flashes. Warren fell below the average mark IMO and that job should be wide open.

Tackle (x2)

Favorites: Carter Warren and Keldrick Wilson
Darkhorses: Gabe Houy, Matt Goncalves, Carson Van Lynn

Warren was not good in his first year as a starter but was just a sophomore. Wilson is a highly sought after FCS tackle that probably didn’t come here to sit on the bench. There are a lot of bodies here. Houy lost his job as a guard to Kradel but earned a fair amount of playing time at tackle platooning with Ulizio. In addition to the players mentioned, Liam Dick is a large kid with potential. Converted TE’s Collier and Carrigan will get opportunities in “heavy” packages

Identifying and developing two tackles into at least serviceable ACC players is one of the most critical components of a successful season.

Tight End:

Favorite: Lucas Krull
Darkhorse: Kyi Wright

The transfer market has been somewhat disappointing (despite three of them recently making the nfl Garner, Flannigan, Griffin-Stewart) but then staff is rolling the dice again with Lucas Krull out of Florida and JUCO Daniel Moraga. There’s a lot of hype building on Krull. He looks like Tarzan. It would be nice to have a productive tight end at Pitt again. Pitt had a solid run from at least Kris Wilson through Scott Orndoff.

Freshman Kyi Wright looks like a good athlete but it’s unknown if he can block at the acc level. Kaymar Mimes is still just a sophomore as well but has about 5 position changes between DE and TE.

Running Back

Favorite: Vincent Davis
Dark horse: Israel Abanikanda

Unless there is a breakout stud, I’m not sure it really matters who starts. V. Davis finished the year on a high note and A. Davis on a very low one. I’m not sold on either. I actually liked what Sibley showed in his limited opportunities but the kid cannot stay on the field. The freshman Abanikanda drew praise very early in spring ball but I’m not sure there was enough time to leapfrog guys. The former 4 star Daniel Carter is still just a freshman as well.

Backup QB

Favorite: Nick Patti
Backup: Joey Yellen

Pickett is a tough kid but sometimes subjects his body to some big time hits. The Delaware game was not ideal to be polite. However it was Pattis first start, as a freshman and he wasn’t that bad and the team won. Nonetheless, the team needs a stronger option at backup. Beville is a big kid but a spring game would have told us a lot more about him. Both of these kids looked like ok prospects but the boy Yellen looked very good in PAC 12 action. If the transfer penalty is waived, I would imagine yellen slides into the QB2 slot.

WR3

Favorite: Jared Wayne
Dark horse: Addison

Barring injury, I think Mack and Jacques-Louis be starters. Jared Wayne looks natural out there but there are a lot of bodies. Freshman Addison is highly regarded. Dontavious Butler-Jenkins has earned time over the years. Michael Smith has yet to be heard from. A number of other freshmen (Gipson, Henningham, Barden) are in the mix. Even ol Tipton is back. He makes Sibley look like an iron man, but he’s back for another year on the ‘ship.

Whoever it is, I pray they do a better job just catching the ball. The team left a horrific amount of points and yards on the field last year just due to drops, fumbles and penalties- especially on the offense.

Agree that finding two “decent” offensive tackles is the key to how the season will go (aside from the impact of the virus, of course).
We had KP running to the sidelines and throwing the ball away way too many times last season.

I’m hoping they try Warren at guard — he just doesn’t appear to have the lateral quickness needed for tackle. I’m guessing Keldrick Wilson and Van Lynn win the starting spots...

Go Pitt.

I like Houy’s athleticism at tackle if he can get stronger. I also would be surprised if AJ Davis, Sibley or Carter isn’t starting RB. V Davis runs hard for a player his size but I don’t know if they want him in there giving up 100lbs to defenders as a pass blocker.

Not sure if K Wilson can block at the ACC level. Just looked at Hampton's schedule from last year and never heard of some of their opponents and not one single P5 school. I am going with Warren and Houy at tackles.

OL - I see Warren remaining a starter at OT - Houy backup at guard - van Lynn at tackle - what about Zubovic
TE - Krull needs to be what we need him to be
WR - I think Jacques-Louis gets lost in jet sweep role, he is better than just that - Wayne emerges as a force - freshman Barden turns into the next Tyler Boyd
QB - Yellen if he is eligible - I like Patti (Pickett clone) and Beville as well
RB - like V.Davis a lot just not for 20+ carries - not down on AJ at all, he is at least adequate and perhaps a lot better than that - have high hopes for the incoming frosh

Explain Wilson being "highly sought"..

Didn't he only start a handful of games at Hampton?

Don’t know about highly sought. But he said his final 4 schools were Pitt, USC, IU and WVU. He started 11 games this past year at OT. At worst he gives us more depth.

I think the interior is set with Morrissey, Hargrove & Kradel. Seems a number of guys will compete at OT. You have Warren, Van Lynn, Houy, Wilson, Goncalves etc. Hopefully the comp makes everyone better.

Offensive talent seems like something an incoming coach inherited from the old regime and a fanbase is looking forward to 2 to 3 years from now when the depth chart is now the new coach’s guys.
Not something that is now 5 recruiting classes deep with the new coach’s guys.

It all starts with the OL. Amazing how much better everyone looks when the line can adequately block up front. The star caliber of OL is the same as it has been for 12 years now....2, 3 and a few 4* OL. Our OL coach needs to develop these guys.

Maybe.
But there isn’t a strong unit. There really isn’t a unit that has the potential to be strong either.
It’s just bad recruiting. At best a strong OL would help mask that.

I like that we have legitimate depth and competition at most positions.

Coaches believed he could play in the ACC, Big 10, Big 12, and Pac-12.

Define “handful”

He was at Hampton for 4 years and was a starter for 1.

I saw his game against Liberty. I'm a bit cautious believing he was offered by all those schools. Offered a roster spot - yeah. Offered a ship - hmm.. not sure.

From the film I saw he is a depth guy. ACC defensive lines are drastically different than his hbcu competition which is basically D2.

i could believe he was offered by those schools. Beggars can’t be choosers.

People apply the same logic to the grad transfer market as they do the recruiting Market. “X school offered and they could get anybody, so he must be good.”

But that’s not really how it works with grad transfers, because the pool of “anybody” is so small. It can be how it works sometimes. But usually it’s, “X school offered because they were desperate and who else were they going to offer?”

There’s a reason why 247 gives so few transfers a 4* grade.

Was he playing left or right tackle in the liberty game?
I'd like to find and watch that.

Maybe.

It’s just bad recruiting. At best a strong OL would help mask that.

I would argue that QBs, and interior linemen are strong units for college. WRs have the potential to be strong if they can just catch the ball and not fumble constantly. Tight end is a total unknown at this point. RBs average right now, tackles maybe a bit worse. It’s not all bad. If this team can put up 28-30 points per game it’s going to be a good year.

Fair enough I can’t say I’ve watched any film of him. Hopefully you’re wrong. At least these guys get to practice against Jones, Weaver, Alexandre, Baldonado, Morgan, etc.

WR has the potential to be good. But there are no 4* studs in the two-deep.
TE is relying on a grad-transfer that has done nothing his entire career. It’s not unknown. It’s just not good as of today.
OL was horrible last year, and now seems to be banking on a grad transfer from Hampton.

The whole thing just isn’t a good look.

It would be nice if Wayne developed into a Mike Shanahan type; big body with dependable hands. Not sure of Wayne’s actual measurements, but he looks thick on tv. Whoever said that Warren should play Guard I agree 100% on that.

Regarding QB, you’ve got a 3+ year starter, two sophomores with starting experience, and a 4 star freshman. That’s better than OK. I felt that a lot of picketts failings had to do with drops and poor protection.

Definitely would take another Shanahan... one of the more underrated receivers of the past few decades along with Derek Kinder, IMO.

Eh. Go to any QB unit ranking and it pretty much starts and ends with the starter. And Pickett is an okay QB.

The rest don’t really move the needle much.
