First things first, Peds suck, Joe Knew and Petrerson(the King of all Jagoffs) deserves yet another kick to the nutsack for this schedule. another edxample of what a boob he was.
That said, we will beat Rice and here's what i see and why next year will be markedly better. Relax all, Duzz is the right guy for the job and is making progress, he knows what he wants to do, and its doable and i believe we will get there.. Its just fitts and starts, which in the real world is how programs progress. I think in 3 years, we will look back and be glad we didnt do a January stroll off of the end of the Clemente Bridge... here're the issues I see after 4 games.
1) Lack of a playmaker at QB position: Ok, we really didnt recruit a quarterback for about two years, so the cupboard was mostly bare. I dont think we understand just how lucky we got by landing with Savage, Peterman.- They could throw the ball downfield..... Hornibrook (who would have likely been the starter this year) bailing to Whisky is understandable, given our instability and his relationship with arguably one of more respected QB coaches/offensive minds in the college game. I would have done the same thing I believe. Trey Anderson, who I saw play in HS, was a gamer and had a good mind for the game, immesurables etc.... everything else, but never struck me as a D1 QB. Great kid,Just didnt have the physical tools needed to excel. DeNucci, (let's avoid the "grit" and "immesurables" discussions) like was basically headed to Penn or some other 1-AA school had the Duzz not needed at the QB in the 11th hour, after Hornibrook bailed. Hes like Trey, smart kid, good leader, gritty etc but cannot make the defense pay for jamming the box with 9 with a 80 yard 9 route to Weah. Doesnt have the tools either. Armstrength breeds confidence and he just cant make the throws needed to spread the ball around. Wont ever be the answer , regardless of how much we all like the underdog story. Browne is turning out to be what I expoected (again got lucky wiuth Savage and Peterman). If we had a dominant line and a RB of substance, he may be able to help but isnt the guy to take the team on his back... Next you got, McVitty was a HS QB for what 6 total games, receiver as a junior and hurt part of the SR year. I dont care if he worked out with Marino every day for a year, game timeis the best development tool for any QB. Maybe he pans out, maybe not, well see next year but he's sure not ready this year. We got a True Freshman in strong armed Pickett, who is reputed to show flashe, and I like this Petti kid, even though he has an unorthodox delivery. I think the lack of OC turnover (see below) will help improve recruiting and talent development. DCs start reconsidering loading box with 8-9 when QB and receiver go vertical and play pitch and catch ending with an endzone party. IN my opinion, this will be our worst yeat at the position, with hopefully next year being the beginning of an upswing of intra-program developed talent at QB poisition. I dont care if you have stallworth and swann out there with Ditka(may his name forever blessed) at TE. they are more maniquens if noone can deliver them the ball.
2. Lack of playmaker at RB Position: Olison is not what you need back there. Hes a 18 wheeler type back with a motor of a Motoguzzi. Hall, is the much same but Moss may be a player, but will get QB killed. Davis and Sibley are true frosh, and likely need more time to develop, especially in protection. young RBs really have an issue with protection schemes , so its not as easy to step in as most may believe, especially with a suspect OL. If im a DC, Im not worried about either of them too much taking it to the house on me up the middle whewn Im sending kitchn sink from the endges. again depth has made George hill a big loss in this area as well for he would be at playing age now and was a STUD...
3) General Lack of talent in , JR and SR Classes due to inconsistant recruiiting/multiple staff changes. You win with your seniors and juniors, even in this day of CFB early exits. Talini had basically two good games last year as a RS JR. From what I saw, he was a C+ talent/production. Roy is likely a C to C+. Good role player but not an every down monster. He, Rori Blair and Roy were your seniors. Blair never panned out, and was inserted into the fire for lack of a better option. A Jury is out on other Hendrix but hes showing some signs...llen Edwards, jury is still out.Makes the all get off of the Bus team, but not a huge impact player .we got some good kids coming up and further recruiting should solidify this. I think missing on DE targets last year may have hurt us more than we know.
4) General lack of experience in key positions(LB, SS, DT, DE,TE)- hard to generate a pass rush. we have some young talemnted guys who are learning and will be good next year, but were not there yet. I think this staff is doing a nice job bringing these kids along but we need more of Duzzs kids to get reps and feel comfortable. I was a boxer years ago and I remember the first few times i got in the ring for a fight, I had trouble controlling my breathing. after my 5th or 6th time in there, breathing became more natural. Just takes sime time to be able to breather and thionk fast and I think our young defense is starting to get there. Our TES are a year away from beting backl to what our recent levels. Flannigan, another transfer, is a Rutgers transfer who is not an every down player or much of a threat in the pass game. The other guys are young.
5) O LIne replacements/execution: Yes this OL lacks the talent and effectiveness of last year and at times, its seivelike.we miss DOJO and BIZ, as well as Oneil at RT. well have averyone but officer back next year, have another year to develop some young guys and that will help. But lack of playmakers at RB and QB, puts additional microscope on those guys. Ollison, unlike Conner doesnt run though armtackles and cant make anyone miss. so he 's down after contact, wherein Connor ran through arm tackles, body tackles, and head takles. As an ex-OL, he makes you look relly good. Your guy may get away late but wont make an armtackle on Connor, resulting in a gain of 15. Ollison and hall, gain of 1. Peterman could move a bit and then make a play downfield(hence the Weah resurrection), something we dont have at QB spot this year. Savage, the ballsyiest QB Ive ever seen at Pitt, would just stand in there and throw the ball on a rope with a lightning release. holding it to the last second, which is what the NFL guys loved so much. Had he had this receiver group, we would be 3-1 for sure.
6) Turnover at OC spot: This one isnt on the Duzz. Say what you will about Chenyey and Canada, they were good, sought after guys and in my opinion were guys I would hire in a heartbeat if i was Duzz. . To me a head coach #1 job is to bring in good people under him needed and empwer them to use theie forseen talent to implenmetn the program changes needed and direct the progress of that change. They both bolted yes, but there is no way Duzz could have prevented that. Coaches are big on loyalty and Duzz probably had conversation during interview but no real way to prevent it. If they sucked really bad, they would have gotten fired so its all even. They were good and they were rewarded for their successes, which we all as professional expect and Duzz had the eye for talent and Pitt was a good enough job to lure them here, so that says something. Regarding Watson, I think hes a good hire, who i think will be here for a while. Ive watched the games and feel he is a solid playcaller, without the talent required to execute, cant make chicken salad out of chicken $#%@.... what he is calling is there, its not being executed due to the above.
7) Belief in the system: Press quarters, like the triple option, west coast offense, wing Tee, Veer(Texas, Houston etc), Bear 4-6, the 5-2, the 4-3 texas, 4-3 MIami as well as the dreaded 4-3 Mow Mow (my favorite defense ever) is based on a sound football philosophy and it works when its executed correctly by those players who have the skills necessary to play each position. were not there yet. were 1-2 years away from seeing the fruits permeate this program. I worked for a coach who won two Texas HS 5 A State championships who said, "Ive been beaten by every type different offense and defense out there, and Ive beaten every kind. It comes down to being sound and having the kids to execute what it is that you do. I dont give a shit what you run cause if its sound and your kids execute, it'll work and you can play with anyone". I think our staff has a sound system and are sound coaches and rthe kids are coming. we just gotta get through this year...
8) I dont care about the NFL players kneeling/standing/locker rooming whaever, or Trump and his f$%#% twitter. all i want is for those elected to do their job and run the F%$#^ country effectively and do what we elected them to do , keep the peace, give us health care and basic govt services for all Americans , and help to improve our quality of life as people, veterans and non-vets alike. If i want a commentary on who knelt and who stood, Ill watch NFL today. They are failing on both sides of the isle and I hope we wake up to these pay no attetuion to the man behind the curtain diversions that these douchebag snake oil salesmen are promoting, rather than addressing the reall issues that affect us all as Americans. Unfortunately, Im not as optomistic about this as I am about our Panthers chances in 2018 moving forward. Not red or blue... hate them all equally.
