Pull the Plug Already

No one will watch if Capel is back next season, so pull the plug and start fresh so there is hope.

Big problem with that: minus Sonny delivering Howland, who brought Dixon, Pitt has never hired a very good basketball coach in its existence.
Wrong! Buzz Ridl, Roy Chipman, and Paul Evans were all good basketball coaches. Ridl lead a putrid program to the 22 straight wins and elite eight in 73-74 and took over bball supremacy in the city at a time when Duquesne bball was more popular than the Steelers. Chipman lead Pitt to 2 ECA and 2 A 10 championships. At least 2 were played at a raucous, sold out civic arena on Friday and Saturday nights. The 2 day/4 team tournaments usually featured Pitt, Duquesne, WVU, Nova, or Rutgers. And Paul Evans lead Pitt to 5 NCAA appearances. He stepped in to what was widely regarded as a talented but undisciplined group, (Smith, Lane, Gore, Aiken etc), and turned them into a winning team and turned Smith and Lane into first round NBA picks. So we have had good coaches at times when there was very little commitment to bball and our facilities were among the worst.

Ridl hated to recruit, Chipman and Timmy G quit preamturely. Evans underachieved. All average hires.

Commitment, facilities . . no wonder the history of the program is so uninspiring.

No one will watch Dennis Gates from Cleveland State coach this team either. Attendance next year doesn't factor in. If it does, you hire Pitino or Miller. The Pete is going to be a ghost town next year regardless.

We made the NCAA tournament 13 times from 2002 to 2016. It wasn’t all that long ago that we won a lot of games.

Since we have absolutely nothing interesting going on with our basketball program now, I'm going to attempt to name our losses in those tournaments off the top of my head:

Pacific
Bradley
Xavier
Wichita State
Butler
Kent State
Marquette
Villanova
Oklahoma State
Michigan State
Florida
Wisconsin
UCLA

Hmm, somehow even this is less depressing than the current state of our program.

Does anybody else find it strange that after a decade of garbage, when the Deacs finally have a decent team worth watching, they are still playing in front of smallish crowds on most nights?

I like Forbes, but I think a big part of Wake's success speaks volumes as to how weak the league is this year.

Wake has probably the smallest fanbase in the P6

You people don't get it. You really think Heather is going to fundraise for an enormous buyout to cover her own mistake to hire a MM coach who no one ever heard of and no one will buy tickets for when the coach she gave a massive extension to only loses 1 player of note. And please dont say for the 19th time that more guys will transfer. If they do, the point is moot because Capel will be gone then. Right now he says "you gave me an extension. I had a Covid year and were down 2 guys this year. I finally have a full team next year and have 5 years left on my contract.
He and everybody else had a Covid year

Please stop talking. He’s done. It’s not a negative for HL to fire him. It’s a negative if she doesn’t/can’t

Not a negative? Her horrific mistake will cost $12 million and I am sorry but I don't believe Pitt has the boosters to cover anywhere close to that in this day and age. Their focus has to be on buying players.

Yeah but if TO Hugley comes back we’ll have the 6th best big in the ACC! God did you whiff on that AA call

Won’t cost that much and who cares. That’s the cost of D1 athletics. Coaching hires fail. Is what it is. Just needs to get the next one right and nobody will care

Our competition/Coaching Openings:
Louisville
Maryland
Pitt

Georgia?
Arizona State?
Georgetown?
Kansas State?
Nebraska?

Am I missing anyone?

He did make the NCAA tournament in 5 of his eight years.
And every one of his teams was loaded with high-end talent. Those were my formative Pitt hoops years and boy were those fun teams — until March, of course.
