Purdue

They will be a Top 20 team or better.

Thanks, I was going to ask. Purdue is a weird program. Either really good, or really mediocre. And if we think WE have March problems, they have been a perennial tourney team but have zero Final 4's and 2 Elite 8's and only 5 Sweet 16's since 1980.

Interesting matchup between two HC's who many viewed among THE most up and coming just a few years ago.

Yea, in many ways, I've always felt Purdue is a very similar program to Pitt. Always pretty good, never really bad, and every once in awhile they put together a Top 10 kind of team. Its a good match-up, however for the casual Yinzer, it doesn't really resonate like the bigger name Big Ten schools do (OSU, Mich, MSU, Ind, Wisky, probably even Maryland). Definitely glad we got Purdue instead of some dreg though.

Looking at Purdue, it is obvious now that this seems to be the program that maybe most parallels Pitt. They had Lute Olson. We had Ben Howland. Jamie is our Gene Keady, even now starting with what looks like unfortunate hair. LOL. We will have some NIT seasons, more NCAA seasons, and even an occasional SR laden team that maybe a top 10 type of team. But never more.

I think the parallels are there.

Lute Olson was at Iowa, not Purdue.

Lee Rose was at Purdue for 2 years before Keady. Purdue actually went to the Final Four (there were 48 teams in NCAA tourney then) in Rose's second year, the year before Keady was hired. For some reason, Rose left Purdue to coach South Florida. Rose also took Charlotte to the Final Four in 1977.

You mean there is a difference between Purdue and Iowa? I thought they were the same. :). That's right, my bad, Lute was at Iowa before going to Arizona.

Hey, I have unfortunate hair also. Can you guys have a sense of humor in anything on this forum? Most miserable people I have ever seen. Just waiting to pounce on anything against der Dixon whether real or joking.

Don't you think Purdue is a fair comparison as a program to Pitt? Just much longer of a history.

Dude -- I actually meant that I liked it and thought it was funny -- I chuckled out loud even. RELAX my friend!!!!

I also got the impression that's what Jeff thought.

Who's the miserable one on here, I must ask?!?

Finally, I do think Purdue is a fair comparison. Especially the hair.

Purdue and Pitt are very similar programs, despite vast differences in geography, recruiting base,

Painter and Dixon have similar styles of play and demeanor. Similar rates of success, I think they're friends as well through USA basketball.

That being said, I noticed while poking around on this site that Pitt is now recruiting Purdue de-commit CJ Walker. He de-committed because of concerns over Purdue's PG style of play.. Ironic he would be open to being recruited to such a similar situation.

That's bad. Because I don't know anymore. We have sunk our lines into the Pro Dixon, Anti Dixon camps, we tend to want to shoot the messenger and destroy credibility. That has happened more than rarely on these boards lately. I mean when Goldbergfan/Duz whatever he is now, we can all laugh it off. But when it is good and respected posters, well if your sensibilities are heightened, well so are the critics.

And Jeff, he took it as no joke, none whatsoever. He already mapped out his mission statement to basically discredit the critics and make them the targets and not the BB program. Which is a shame, because I, yes me Jeff, am not just likely the only other person on this board to know where Yeppoon, Queensland is, but have actually been there.

I think it was you who mentioned that. But sorry, if my reactions are heightened, but look in the mirrors gentlemen, you guys have been on the attack mode. At least we, are criticizing Jamie, you guys are making it personal with the critics. And that is pretty sad.

You attacked me in recent threads. The only time I have initiated contact with you directly in recent days was to say your post was nice. otherwise I have just fended off your repeated personal attacks that came without provocation, like this thread. You keep saying this is your schtick. I don't think it is. I think you are legitimately sick. WE haven't drawn lines of Pro and Anti Dixon. YOU have. And that is part of your illness I believe.

I did take it as a joke. It was funny. Jamie's hair is funny, like Keady's. The fact you assumed the worst speaks of you, not me. I think it is clear who the problem is, from this example alone.

yepoon is Australia. Kiwi is New Zealand.

Owt, I'm not even sure I understand this reply to me.

You made a funny, lighthearted joke. I said I liked it. Then you turn it into this and you say I need to look in the mirror.

What am I missing?

Let's be clear..
You want certain types of posts ( those you agree with) to go unchallenged while applauding the challenges to other types (those you disagree with) as being good for dialogue.

Quite the double standard.

Then you'll often talk about how "soft" kids are these days, while demanding as a grown man to be treated with kid gloves and pouting when you aren't.

If you don't want the content of your post criticized, post better content.

Cheers

In this post, you said "you guys." I hope you are not including me as I have not engaged in one personal attack. I challenge you to find any evidence otherwise.

Especially as he has initiated the most personal attacks on this site in the past week. The irony must be lost on him.

I think this is a good draw for us.

If you remember last year we drew Indiana away and got blown off the court. Not a matter of Indiana being that good a team, but instead a matter of we being HORRIBLE at the time. They got up to a 20 point lead or so in the first half and never looked back.

The fact that we went from being that horrible of a team, and this continued into the start of the ACC season, to being on the bubble for an NCAA bid... is amazing and we did indeed run out of gas but we will have to see how we look this coming season.

So, again, this is a good draw. We beat UNC, ND and Cuse at home once we started playing good (yeah, on the offensive side, the D continued to be real bad), so it will be interesting to see if we can get a W here.

If we don't then we can at least see where we are at.

On the other hand, scheduling the game in Japan to me is bad news. There is the jet lag going and the jet lag returning. Not as bad for a west coast team but for an east coast team.... most coaches are wise enough to not put their players through something like this but Dixon... seems to like to learn the hard way. Yeah, I know some are gonna disagree with me on this but then let THEM say why we totally ran out of gas last year (IMO the trips to the Bahamas and then Hawaii.. and thus the LONG season... was part of the reason... the other part was players having to rise to the ocassion and that took something out of them).

Yeah, I just found out about the Gonzaga game in Japan today and am kinda ticked off Dixon would schedule something like that.

I guess you'd be p*ssed if you hit the lottery, too?? It's a great opportunity, national TV....and no cupcake opponent. You'd have a fit if we played the Blawnox School for the Thick. Have a happy weekend!

NTOP, you just don't get it. There is nothing, and I mean literally nothing, that can sap the energy of a 20 year old quite like a trip to the Bahamas that was taken six months prior. Do you really think that those guys had sufficient time to recover by March from a trip that was taken in August? You must have never traveled anywhere before.

Hey, I get tired walking from this desk to the coffee machine in our kitchen....23 steps....used to be 17! It's a bit of a reach to criticize the staff for forcing all these Bataan Death March trips and then blame our late season collapse on a vacation. To each his own, I guess.

The complaint about the Bahamas trip makes absolutely no sense to me. You realize lots of teams do those types of trips, right? In fact, Kentucky did one this year and they almost went 40-0.

You are minimizing the impact, given how playing out of position overseas would tire anyone out.

Hello Pitt fans. Purdue fan here, but I'm also a Pitt fan (wife graduated from Pitt). I came over here to see what you thought of the match-up. It is funny you compare both schools and I think you were pretty close. Purdue has a long history of winning (winning record against all B10 schools accept OSU, and most B10 championships), but not particularly wired for NCAA tourney success mixed with some bad luck.

If you don't know much about the Boilers, here is some info:
Purdue fans are very excited about the team next year. We had a poison apple or two on the roster that drug the team down for a couple of years, but they transferred last summer, so we are back on the rise. Our front court is certainly our strength and will be one of the top in the country. We have two 7-footers, with AJ Hammons as the centerpiece, who decided (wisely IMO) not to enter the draft. We also have our first 5* burger boy & Indiana Mr. BB in more years than I'd like to admit coming in at the 4 in Caleb Swanigan. Swanigan will likely be pushing our starting 4 from last year (Edwards) to the 3 who was a very versatile freshman for us last year and just missed the final cut for U19 USA basketball team (Swanigan is actually on that team).

We also return the B10 DPOY in Davis and our top shooters (Mathias & Stephens) will hopefully be healthy this summer and during the season (not the case last year). The biggest question mark is PG, which will be covered by committee, apparently. We basically return the entire team accept our starting PG Jon Octeus, and add Swanigan. OOC was sluggish last year, but the young team finally figured out how to play D and Purdue was able to make it in the NCAAs.

Really pulling for Pitt to get back into form and back to the NCAAs, so hopefully we'll have a good game in December.

Good luck to ya.

I dont think Pitt/ Purdue parallel each other nowadays.

in fact...they are like two elevators going in different directions.......

Boilernuke... from what you are saying I would think going into the season... you got a better team than us. Two 7 footers and one of them might be drafted by the NBA... and Swanigan. Even I have heard that name and he was really up there as being one of the top recruits... and most of your players from last year back.

Last year, we were not an NCAA team and looked like 'not even close' early on... some bad losses in OOC and then losing to NCS by 18, barely beating BC and then losing to Clemson at home. At that point we looked like an ACC bottom dweller. But, first Jamel Artis, and then Sheldon Jeter, and then Chris Jones, really got going and we got some good Ws and probably would have gotten an NCAA invite if it were not for the late season collapse. But, collapse we did (sometimes happens to young teams) in losing our last 5 games in a row.

But, we only lost one significant rotation player and Dixon has brought in three good graduate transfers, and everyone else has another year of experience under their belt. And, that one significant rotation player, Cam Wright, put in a total of 4 3balls at a .211 clip and he is being replaced by graduate transfer Sterling Smith, who put in 76 3balls at a .418 clip (at Coppin State) so THAT should be a big (huge?) improvement. Also, two graduate transfer inside players and both of them can play. So, how well we do this coming year probably rests on how well Jamie Dixon can put these players together as a team and... how well we play defense. We were able to score last year and that should continue but, unlike Jamie Dixon teams of the past, we were terrible on defense last year.

The good things for us on this is the game is at The Pete and it is later in the OOC schedule so that gives the players time to come together as a team. If the team progresses like we hope, then this should be a competitive game. Otherwise, not so much.
