its crazy ... Lob pass, push off, get separation and catch ... Insane
you have to push off after they hold you.
Curious as to what the ESPN announcers had to say about the pushing off. A friend of mine texted me during the game about one of the amazing catches by a VT receiver and I responded that our CBs simply weren't good enough. He replied that they weren't playing that bad and that the VT receivers were getting away with a lot of pushoffs. While my friend is a casual Pitt fan, he is not an alum and is not that emotionally invested in the team, so I consider his POV pretty neutral. I thought it was pretty obvious from where I sat.
Why ? its true. When you play press man the whole game and a team throw fade balls, there is going to some holding by DB's and some pushing off by WR's. A DB better be ready to be physical if you gonna play a physical coverage style. Its real simple, their WR's were bigger and stronger than the DB's.Idiot post of the day.

There is a difference in hand checking and holding. I saw alot of hand checking. Typically if both players are hand checking it is a no call. The main problem in the game were PI calls without grabbing between both players.. most should have been no calls... but unfortunately the calls were not consistent... and mostly went in favor of VT.. There also 2 holding calls on Pitt which were valid, but no holding on VT on Price during many plays.. Im not whining or excuse making just looking for consistency..

Not if you watched the game and our DBs. It seems like our CBs are taught to grab their shoulder and never let go. It is embarrassingly bad.Idiot post of the day.
The difference is that if the player is looking back for the ball the refs will almost always give them the benefit of the doubt on hand checking. Both offensively and defensively. But if a guy is not looking back for the ball and never does look back for the ball then refs are far less tolerant of putting your hands on the other guy. When the receiver is looking back for the ball and trying to make a play on the ball the standard is different than when the defensive back is not looking back for the ball and is not trying to make a play on the ball. We can bitch all we want about that being some sort of double standard, but that's the way that refs call it at all levels of football.
When our corners start looking back for the ball and start making plays on the ball then they will start being less likely to get called for pass interference. But probably not one moment sooner.
He was trying to play the ball. Do you guys not understand that guys who are playing the ball get much more leeway than guys who are not playing the ball? Both offensively and defensively.

This was a knock on Michigan State corners entering the NFL draft, particularly Trae Waynes:

""Grab, grab, grab!" Transition to a less hands-on cover style will take time. Would grab opposing wide receivers at top of route at times rather than trusting length and ball skills."
I've watched all those teams a lot and it is night and day how much worse Pitt is.A lot of schools are teaching that technique - Watch UNC, FSU, Clem and Louis
We were holding the WR the entire time.On the key play of the game (Motley at QB) our db had inside position and was looking for the ball - their receiver came over his back and grabbed our players helmet - that was the biggest play in the game (and yes, we may have held (a bit) earlier in the play, but well before the ball was arriving. That call is not made many more times than it is.
Name one pass play on the outside where our corners weren't grabbing arms and jerseys. Go back to the film. I'm sure there were one or two such occasions, but only one or two. There is a difference in hand checking and holding. I saw alot of hand checking. One problem is the PITT DB's have consistently been beat all year on and off national TV For better or worse they've earned a reputation of getting beat and penalized a lot.
Officials see this stuff over the course of the year and unfortunately the PITT secondary isn't going to get the close calls since they haven't earned any respect so far in the season!
This happens in lots of sports with MLB being one where pitchers and hitters who " earned" respect get the close calls!
The refs could have flagged us for PI on every single one of those sideline jump balls. When they did flag us, half the time the WR made the catch anyway. One problem is the PITT DB's have consistently been beat all year on and off national TV For better or worse they've earned a reputation of getting beat and penalized a lot.

PItt, unfortunately, is not very good at it.

I think we set pass defense back about 50 years in that game.
I can't remember seeing worse pass D out of a pair of corners than we had in that game-and I mean out of any combo we used out there.. They literally had no chance to prevent a catch, even when they had their hands all over the receiver. It was a joke.
