Do they generally do it with transfers or by recruiting high school kids?

I see posts on here from time to time lauding a new coach for turning a team around. Usually it seems that they do this by cleaning house and bringing in transfers.

Nobody seems to want to mention it, but Capel has zero recruits for next year. (yes, that's a joke) Maybe with the new transfer rules and NIL he's decided to change his approach. Why beat his head against a wall chasing HS kids when:

1. He's a good enough recruiter to get top kids interested, but they ultimately choose a better program.

2. He finds good players, then they leave.

3. He lands fringe top 100 guys, who prove to be busts.

Who are you missing more this year, Drumgoole or Sibande? Who would you rather as the primary perimeter shooter, Santos or Horton? Who have you been more impressed with, Jeffress or Burton and Gueye? Maybe transfers are the way to go from now on. Pitt has always relied on experienced upperclassmen, but it might be that we have to let them go through the maturation process somewhere else in the future. Concentrate on transfers and fill in with HS recruits, rather than the other way around.

If nothing else, a recruiting blitz of the portal for 6 weeks when transfer season starts seems much easier than long distance baby sitting HS kids for 9 months. Maybe that's what Capel is thinking. I doubt anyone in the local media has enough sense to ask him if he's changed his approach, and he probably has too much sense to give them a candid answer.

Lots more opportunities to do it faster now with transfers. I’ll use Arkansas as one of the prime examples.

Bingo. Gotta recruit the portal just as much without dealing with parents/handlers for the most part. Wait til things shake out in the spring. I’ll take a mature body and skillset (that can be evaluated by looking at game film) rather than miss on some 17 year old who needs to grow his game a bit. Pitt is not getting NBA ready HS studs but mostly developmental types. New game new era. Fans need to adjust as much as coaching staffs.

Everyone can whine all they want , but the bottom line is that unless the bottom falls out of the program with embarrassing loses and transfers JC will be the coach next season . Pitt has a lot reaso$ to bring him back .

As has been mentioned in other threads, for Capel to possibly stick around he needs to master the two year player plan, not four year. Not saying he will or won’t be around but it certainly seems that’s how recruiting is going.

Seems like the only thing basketball boosters are willing to donate for right now is the buyout.

My guess is they have nowhere near the amount needed .

If I was JC I wouldn’t negotiate the amount lower one penny , want me gone show me the money .

If he walks away he has no chance at ever getting another crack at a job like this .

Especially if he returns Hugley and the guards. If I'm him, I'm telling Heather he's making the NCAAT next year with those guys so if she wants to get rid of him, not a dime back.

I think it's only $12 million. I don't think think money will be an issue if Pitt wants to make a change. And yes, Pitt should fork over the full amount if they go that route.

Twelve million isn’t much for the entire university, but it’s massive in athletic budget .

Chump change. If they feel a coaching change is needed to get one of the two major revenue sports right, or at least upgraded significantly, they won't think twice about stroking a check for $12 mil.

Think your greatly mistaken . If $12,000,000 is chump change then they could’ve overwhelmed Hurley , but they didn’t .

Shelling out 12mil and then having to pay another coach for an athletic department that claims they have to be subsidized by general funds to fund their entire sports programs is problematic.

People lose perspective in sports saying 12 million is chump change , 12 million is a lot of money especially for a program that’s not even close to pulling its weight . Without ACC money Pitt is bleeding red ink in Bb .
