Do they generally do it with transfers or by recruiting high school kids?
I see posts on here from time to time lauding a new coach for turning a team around. Usually it seems that they do this by cleaning house and bringing in transfers.
Nobody seems to want to mention it, but Capel has zero recruits for next year. (yes, that's a joke) Maybe with the new transfer rules and NIL he's decided to change his approach. Why beat his head against a wall chasing HS kids when:
1. He's a good enough recruiter to get top kids interested, but they ultimately choose a better program.
2. He finds good players, then they leave.
3. He lands fringe top 100 guys, who prove to be busts.
Who are you missing more this year, Drumgoole or Sibande? Who would you rather as the primary perimeter shooter, Santos or Horton? Who have you been more impressed with, Jeffress or Burton and Gueye? Maybe transfers are the way to go from now on. Pitt has always relied on experienced upperclassmen, but it might be that we have to let them go through the maturation process somewhere else in the future. Concentrate on transfers and fill in with HS recruits, rather than the other way around.
If nothing else, a recruiting blitz of the portal for 6 weeks when transfer season starts seems much easier than long distance baby sitting HS kids for 9 months. Maybe that's what Capel is thinking. I doubt anyone in the local media has enough sense to ask him if he's changed his approach, and he probably has too much sense to give them a candid answer.
