Question on 3 calls late in the game (not saying they were wrong)

1) We missed a shot and Chris Jones got the rebound and was ready to attempt a shot - play was stopped and Louis was given the ball - What happened there?

2) After Louisville hit the 3 to put them up 3, on their next possession I thought Onauku could have been called for an offensive foul (it did not look like our guy flopped) but he was able to complete the play with a pass for a layup putting them up 5

3) With the game probably over, Artis went up for a shot and was swatted to the ground like a fly - nothing was called.

1)Jones took the shot, got it blocked and pushed off to get the rebound of the block. Proper call. D9n't think I've ever seen it happen quite that way before but not a bad call.

2)Probably could have been called either way. Maybe a good no-call? I'd have to see it again to be sure.

3) Another brain-fart by Artis. He tried to force his way through an opening that wasn't there and lost the ball, again. He had at least 5 turnovers, many at crucial junctures. I'm beginning to seriously consider that even with his double-figure scoring, we might be better without him.

I thought both calls one and three were obviously correct. On the first one Jones shoved the guy to get the rebound. The whistle was a little late perhaps, but it was a well deserved foul. On the third one Artis drove the ball right into the chest of a guy who was standing there straight up with his arms straight over his head who happens to be a lot bigger than him. There is no way that the ref should have bailed him out and called a foul there. No way.

The second one I don't even remember giving it a second thought, so I had no problem with it live.

Thanks Harve - On #3, it did appear Artis forced something that wasn't there, but I believe there was still strong contact. Maybe the ref ruled it as a block at the net in volleyball

All three calls were fine.

Just because there was contact doesn't mean there was a foul. If you were forced to call something there (and there was no reason to) it was obviously Artis who initiated contact on a defender who had position and wasn't moving. So you'd have had to have called it on Artis.

Isn't that what I just posted?

The only call the refs blatantly got wrong tonight was giving Louisville the ball after everyone in the arena and watching on TV saw the ball go off a Louisville player's leg out of bounds.

Terrible, terrible call.

Agreed (that it was a terrible call), but we also got the benefit of a couple pretty bad calls too.

I noticed earlier in the year Jamel has not been jumping straight up on his shots, particularly when driving. He's been allowing his body to lean forward in the second half of the season and, to my eye, his shooting percentage on those pull-up type shots has really fallen off.

Consequently, he's trying to take more balls to the hoop. He draws a lot of fouls that way, and , based on what Mike and Ryan did, it loked like the game plan was to attack the rim and take the ball at Onuaku.

I like us to be more aggressive, but a 8 ft jumper in the lane is a pretty good shot. Sometimes, you just can't get to the rim.

I think on the Jones foul (because I wondered what happened too) the issue for me was the poor TV angle and the commentators yacking about something else. ACC announcers and TV sucks by the way.

Agree on all points, I know his mid range shot is not great, and I agree if you can drive directly to the basket and get the layup and or foul shots that is they way to go.

But, I saw the same opening to drive past his man he saw AND saw that Onuaku was in the position to guard the basket and was waiting for him to take the pull up the whole play.

It looked pretty obvious to me.

The Artis drive was simply another example of him dribbling to deep, getting a bit out of control, and forcing things.
Artis needs to really watch this game tape to see that he is dribbling too much and often getting too deep.
The number of turnovers from sloppy dribbling is beyond understanding.
This isn't Ollie from Hoosiers, this is acc basketball. Player IQ and skills should be pretty high along with serious decision making smarts.

Agree 100%, Jeff. Just a dumb play.
