R.I.P. Lou Brock

One of my favorites and one hell of a base stealer .
Hall of Fame outfielder Lou Brock dies at age 81
When they mention one sided trades, Lou Brock for Ernie Broglio is usually the first one mentioned. The Cards fleeced the Cubs on that one because Speedy Lou was one of the best. And he only stole bases when he needed to. Unlike Henderson who stole just to run up steal totals. RIP Lou Brock.

And he only stole bases when he needed to.

There was a story yesterday that noted one of Brock's favorite stories was that the year that Aaron broke the home run record the NL President called Brock into his office before the season started and told him that he was going to break the stolen base record that season. Brock said he might be too old to do that and asked why, and he said he was told that the NL loved the fact that all the talk in the off season was about the NL (because of Aaron), and that they wanted to keep that going all season long. This was at a time when the leagues were separate and in a rivalry with each other. Brock was told that there would be stories all year long about how many bases he was stealing (or not stealing), so he needed to go out there and steal as many bases as he could.

So, ah, no.

Brock and Bob Gibson together ended the Red Sox' impossible dream season in the 1867 World Series. At Busch Stadium the organist played the theme from Shaft whenever Brock came to bat.

Not saying Brock never stole when it wasn't needed. But your take is an outlier. For the bulk of his career it was old time baseball. Steal when the situation called for it.
