R.I.P. Vic Davalillo

Great trade by Joe Brown to get Nelson Briles and Davalillo from St Louis for Matty Alou and George Brunet. Helped put them over the top in 1971.

As I recall, Vic was a good fill-in, whom the Pirates platooned against right-handed pitching. He was versatile, playing first base and anywhere in the outfield. And coming off the bench, he excelled as a reliable pinch hitter in the Pirates’ run to the 1971 championship.

It’s a shame that most young people on these boards haven’t had the thrill of seeing the Pirates win a World Series.

Amen. Was fortunate enough to see the 71' and the "Lumber Co."
79' team ..
Fun times for sure ...
Thanks for the thread mike...my era too. I had the pleasure of meeting Steve Blass through business years ago... a complete gentleman. Godspeed Vic.
