Just like the last time Pitt was between athletic directors, Randy Juhl will assume that post in the interim.
Chancellor Patrick Gallagher announced in a statement Tuesday morning that Juhl will serve as acting athletic director as the university transitions from Scott Barnes’ tenure. Juhl already had been appointed chair of a search committee tasked with helping to find Barnes’ full-time replacement, and now he will have the same temporary position as he did in 2015 after the dismissal of Steve Pederson.
“I have asked Randy to resume this role in order to minimize disruption within our athletic department and facilitate coordination with the ongoing search process for our next athletic director,” Gallagher’s statement said of Juhl, who retired in 2015 as Vice Chancellor and Dean Emeritus of Pharmacy. “I am deeply grateful that he has agreed to come out of retirement to resume a pair of roles that he successfully carried out for us two years ago.”
Juhl’s official start date is Jan. 20, around the time Barnes will no longer be in the office on a full-time basis. Barnes’ last day as a Pitt employee before becoming Oregon State athletic director is Feb. 12, and while he has expressed regret that he won’t be here to see through many of the projects he started, the hope is that Juhl’s familiarity will help with that.
“With Randy as our acting athletic director, we will continue to move forward with our strategic plan,” Gallagher said. “Our shared goal is to maintain our outstanding momentum in advancing Pitt athletics.”
Pitt’s last athletic director search concluded April 24, 2015, when Barnes was hired from Utah State. For now, the only update Gallagher has offered publicly on the status of the search came the day of the Pinstripe Bowl, Dec. 28, in New York City.
“It’s just getting started. … We’re expecting to be a very competitive destination for some great AD candidates, so I’m looking forward to that,” Gallagher said at a pregame news conference.
