OK. This year the Portal is a novelty and lots of players are exercising their freedom to move for whatever the reasons. So the numbers are extremely high. However any player who chooses to stay with his present program and does not expend his “1 time free transfer with no sit out penalty” option can then do so next year (or any other year he’s in school) at his discretion.
This will create a need for all head coaches throughout college basketball to have to re-recruit all of the current players who they desire to retain the most (and who have not yet transferred in and used up their 1 time free move) on the current team, every year. This aspect is going to create a very interesting dynamic. It will apply to college football as well. How this all plays out moving forward will certainly be an interesting phenomenon to observe. I imagine it’ll keep the Transfer Portal activity pretty active, even if maybe not to the extreme level of activity we’re seeing in this inaugural year of free agency.
D1 players who have already transferred once with no penalty would be able to transfer again.
